I wouldn't miss it either. I tried to find something that the dialog allows and it can't be done with the current options in the tool control bar and I found none.
However, I wonder if the dimensions of the bar are enough for adding more advanced features in the future. I'd really love to see in some point opentype features like ligatures and alternates, paragraph controls for flowed text (like spacing before and after), etc. and maybe that will require a dialog, so I'm not sure if killing the current dialog is "future proof".
Anyway, with the current features it doesn't seem to be necessary at all.
