You seem to be mixing different aspects. Of course automatically converting to path when necessary is a good thing, and we do it in some cases already and will keep adding more of it. But, with or without autoconversion, the user needs some way to categorize and make sense of the awful lot of commands he has available. Separating path-related commands is the most natural thing to do, because these commands are conceptually different from all others. This is just the most very logical categorization, which helps users navigate in the commands. Whether they are in a separate menu or in a submenu in Object is secondary, though the latter option just adds clumsiness without any other benefit.
