I am doing some experimenting with svg pages in lieu of html. Is there a reason why the inkscape.org front page is not done in svg?

Of course there is one. It's called “support by web browsers” :)

Most of them support the kind of basic svg that we'd want to show off and those that don't would get a more basic page with perhaps some insistent language that they're using a rather inadequate web browser.
Although Inkscape isn't a very good web-svg editor yet.

Will you personally volunteer to redo all of our new website in SVG once again? Because at the current pace of development of the new website it's just not going to happen.
I have even more questions like proper i18n, how content should be added etc., but in the end it all boils down to people willing to work on that.

To be fair, official android (at least on phones) is just now getting SVG support with ice cream sandwich.

From a pragmatic web designer/developer's perspective, I would say that creating an entire web page – let alone website – in SVG is a really bad idea. At least for now. As Mr. Prokoudine pointed out, browser support isn't great.
It just seems like making web pages with SVG must be very experimental at this point. Even if browsers supported it very well there are many challenges. Basically, you'll have to build everything you need from scratch.
- No CMS or wiki that I'm aware of generates SVG. - All pages would have to be published as XML - note the challenges that that created for XHTML. - Do search engines index SVG files?
I think we have enough of a challenge in designing, updating and maintaining an excellent HTML-based website with all of the free scripts and tools that are available.
Just my two cents. As a professional I've never heard of anybody using SVG in this way. Though it does sound like a cool idea.
