Is there anything written on "mass" and "drag" for instance or on the rationale behind what the tool is doing?
My guess is as good as yours. The original author of the tool is not active in Inkscape. I agree that the tool is pretty useless, but let it be until we have a better replacement.

I agree that the SVG spec does not have a calligraphy tool, or a drawing model to match it. But I do think that it is desirable to be able to mimic an artist pushing a drop of ink with a knife. This is -Inkscape- by the way ;-)
As long as the resulting beziers are within the SVG spec, then Cool. Nichevo podobnovo, Bratyets!

I do not think the calligraphy tool is useless. I would just like to know what on earth it is doing??? It is certainly not acting like a calligraphic pen. For a start the vast majority of broad nib calligraphy is done with a constant pen angle. The current one wanders back and forth making interesting but not calligraphic marks.
The original author must have had something in mind. I just wish that I knew what it was.

Yup. No problem with mimicing an artist pushing a drop of ink with a knife but lets not call that calligraphy even in -Inkscape-.
