Fwd: [Inkscape Brasil] SK1 também já manipula dados no "device-cmyk"
hey, Jon,
here is a translation to english of an email message that one guy sent a few moments ago to the brazilian inkscape-users mailing list. I'm afraid we've got a wave of misunderstanding here...
I'm going to travel now to countryside (I'll be offline and I'll be back to the internet on january 4th)

Olá pessoal
Há alguns dias conversei com o Igor, responsável pelo desenvolvimento do sK1, e ele disse que seria possível o sK1 usar também os dados "device-cmyk". Hoje recebi a confirmação, vejam o chat:
[translation:] Some days ago I chatted with Igor, the guy responsible for developing sK1, and he told me that it would be possible to make sk1 use data from "device-cmyk". Today I have received a confirmation, check our recent chat:
Igor: According to your request we have implemented device-cmyk in sK1 me: hi there Oh, great to know! can I say that in Inkscape-brasil mailing list? Igor: yes of course the code in SVN me: thanks! Igor: device-cmyk is implemented as for SVG importer and for SVG exporter
Alguém disposto a testar? :D
Obrigado, até mais...
[translation:] So, SVG files created in Inkscape that have data stored in "device-cmyk" will be properly opened in sK1 respecting those values. I just dont know whether sK1 exports PDF files in CMYK, but if that's the case, it will be possible to open in sK1 the files created in Inkscape and export them as PDF with colors information in CMYK. Anyone willing to test it? :D

Yes, it was implemented one or two weeks ago, to the best of my knowledge.

Yes, this is exactly what sK1 has been able to do for, er, 2,5+ years now.

If that is SVG...
THEN IT IS THE WRONG THING!
Sorry to be over dramatic, but especially in the SVG 1.2 color proposal, the purpose of device-cmyk is for *unmanaged* color workflows. In modern times *nobody* really should be using that. (well, except for edge cases like people trying to create patches to feed a colorimeter to profile a specific printer).
At the least, data should be using some "standard" CMYK profile, such as SWOP.
Much as RGB images nowadays have come to be tagged as either sRGB or AdobeRGB, CMYK too needs to be tagged to a specific colorspace.
If needed, the OpenICC or Scribus people (the latter having been doing professional PDF creation for many years now) can fill one in on specific details.
And, yes, I've taken care to confirm this with the editors of the SVG 1.2 Color spec.
And if SK1 is promoting an *unmanaged* color workflow, then it is actually harming the progress of Open Source in the professional print world.
