The new tool is nice, but how do I set the origin to anything other than the lower left corner? I want to use it to measure distances between arbitrary points. There must be a shortcut (such as Shift+click) to set the origin, and the current origin must be indicated on the screen at all times while the tool is active. The shortcut to set the origin must be added to the tool's statusbar hint.
Also, "Font size" must be removed from the tool's controls - it's pure UI preference, not something you change in the document, so its presence here is quite confusing. I'd suggest placing it into the tool's page in Preferences.
There's a funny bug: when I drag with Ctrl to snap and stretch the angle to 180 degrees, the circle arc turns into an ellipse.

This seems to be a very recent regression, AFAICT introduced in r12601/12602 (no bug filed yet).
Test with r12600 or earlier revisions - the origin of the measured distance / angle is exactly where the user clicked and started to drag.

cool!
It's been a long time I've worked on Inkscape development for the last time. Seeng this message in the list, I felt the urge to fix a bug in a code I have written in the past (you know... you always kinda carry the burden of mantaining the code you contributed once to a project). So, a few minutes ago I've setup a local working copy of inkscape source code in the computer I've been using nowadays and built it. Once the build was done, I've seen you're message here, with the bugfix.
Now I feel like I need to do something for Inkscape today. Sounds like a good thing to do while celebrating the 30th anniversary of the GNU project :-)

Felipe, I'm at the hackfest in Boston for this FSF Gnu Birthday. I'm going to be working on the align/distribute and one of the new designs is to integrate the functionality into the Measurement tool. Since it's one of the only tools that doesn't use any of it's selection and had no on-canvas functionality yet.
I'd like to talk to you more about this design if you have the time.
Martin,
I need the font size option as I create very large documents. Zooming in just to see the results is alot of extra work.

It doesn't depend on the size of documents, or zoom. Its smallness only depends on your screen resolution and size. So it's an option that is best set once in prefs, not adjusted all the time.

I was assuming the measurement tool had a text option similar to that of the measurement extension, where I have to enter a large font size to see the results on my documents.
Thanks for the correction!
