Re: [Inkscape-devel] Tango icons as default set

A bit unfair, don't you think? First' that is not the case. Second, I'm sure everyone here has a different opinion about what a good workflow/integration is ;) Actually now that you mention you're talking about VISUAL integration, which (IMHO) is a minor issue. Integration in a broader sense is what user needs to improve his workflow, like in Creative Suite. And I'm talking about major integration here! ;)
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be offensive. When I wrote "You don't seem to care" I meant that you were talking about a workflow that mixed free and commercial apps and it didn't seem that a free-software-only workflow was a priority for you. My english isn't as good as I'd like, so sometimes I have to simplify some sentences because I'm not sure about how to write them, and that can lead to misunderstandings. :-)
Of course that features integration is the MOST important aspect of a common workflow alla Creative Suite. I had to find a not-so-comfortable worflow because of that and I suffer frequently that lack of integration, but that's something I have to live with because I want to use free software (even applications that didn't reach the 1.0 state yet ;-) Usually people who has a legal copy of Adobe CS uses their applications, not development software that might be unstable or incompatible. So your case is not the average either. You choose to work with inkscape (which is great, beautiful and certainly has bugs) instead of Illustrator, that is already part of a suite that has better interchange between applications handling. If I say "you don't care" I mean that you probably "don't see that difference as a problem", so having so different icons is something that you find acceptable, as you find acceptable that Inkscape and Indesign don't have a better integration.
Anyway, even though I don't agree with several of your points I respect your opinion and I think we could reach a compromise. My first proposition was to make the current Tango set the default as is, but I find some very reasonable suggestions on the go.
-Creating new tangoified icons for the drawing tools more similar to the current tools (and unifying their look: all pointing to the same direction and showing the caps with a stroke). -Creating a new icon for the 3D Box tool with a 2-point or 3-point perspective. -Adding color to the geometric primitives tools (I wouldn't use too saturated colors. Not red for the circle -the REC icon- but shades of pink like the default one). -Creating a tangoified version of the current Tweak icon (I'm not sure about this. I really prefer the Tango icon, but it's matter of taste). -Creating a new icon for the bucket fill tool. I agree that the current Tango icon is too flat, but I don't think it's problematic for recognition. But some people think it is so let's change it.
As a final thought, I'd like to back up the comment from Aaron Spike. He clearly states that he prefers the current set, but he stresses the importance of the unified look and the need of a section in the preferences to change the icon themes easily.

Hello!
I have made some modifications over the theme from Guillermo Espertino.
Guillermo and me have been talking and we think that this new modifications could be a nicesolution to renew the default icon theme but no tango-ished too much it.
I have redesigned some tools to use the original ones but adding a consistent look and ensure the correct grid align and visualization over dark and clear background.
I have retouch the border of some tools like some of you have suggest.
I retouched the Text Tool to allow a little more constrast with dark background.
And some others minimal changes. ;)
I hope you find this way as the correct one. ;)

Only one thing more: please be polite. This work is not simple and is a work that requieres time and effort. So, please, avoid to convert this mail thread in a war between pro-Tango and anti-Tango or a list of unviable particular personal wishes. We must think about the usability, technical issues, and problems with some icons wich could not be correct. But alwais send constructive ideas, please.
We could, together, improve Inkscape. Thats the big rock. ;)

Wow! Great job. The pen icons are not art-libre, but you've done them very well. I like them. I wonder what people will think.

This is turning out to be a nice compromise. I haven't looked at the set thoroughly, but it looks pretty good in many respects.
I think the old writing tools do fit nicely with the tangoish style as you've redone them.
Two things you might consider changing:
- keep the cursor style consistent between the selector and node tool icons - the drawing tools still have an outlined look, which is always going to look odd to me
I also think there's a problem with the concept that we have to have one set which is all things to all people.
As I suggested before, I think it would be best to have separate sets. I think there's definitely a use for the completely consistent Tango/Art Libre set, as well as a Tangoified non-consistent set (which could be the same as this modified set, which does the job nicely in many respects), as well as versions of each for a dark background (which should be simple enough to update), as well as (your desired style here).
Can we agree to work on this concept? I think it would make a lot more people happy.
