Expected LPEs for 0.47
Hi all,
JF sent me this and I couldn't resist posting it here: http://math.univ-lille1.fr/~barraud/Inkscape/effectPreview.svg
I especially like the sketch effect!
Cheers, Johan

That is cool, but it reveals a bug: when loaded into Inkscape SVN the effect versions disappear, unlike batik or firefox. This means inkscape recognizes them as LPEs but since it does not yet know these particular LPEs it fails to display them at all. The correct behavior in that case would be to not treat them as LPEs at all and just show them as paths, as all other renderers do. Ironically, Inkscape 0.45 shows them correctly.
I think this is an important thing to fix because we have, and are likely to continue to have, a broad mix of Inkscape versions being used in the wild, and looks like future versions will differ in the range of LPEs they understand.

I agree.
One other thing to think about: we'll also need to consider what should happen if the LPE object is edited (as raw paths) in a version of Inkscape that doesn't support the LPE, and then loaded in a version of Inkscape that does.

I'm afraid this will inevitably lead to discrepancies, as it always did with stars and spirals. A very old problem, I remember we discussed it. A check of whether the given params correspond to the given d= is going to be unreliable because of varying (and now even user-settable) rounding.
Does that mean that you will be able to convert a LPE to basic paths (destructively of course), in the same way objects like stars and spirals can be converted?

Of course, and you already can - try ctrl+shift+c on a path with LPE

For now, the knot effect replaces all the 'flat' crossings of the input path by 'positive' ones (i.e. one strand on top of the other, and when you go from bottom to top, the direction of the strands turns in the positive direction). It is still quiet buggy however, and keep crashing unexpectedly.
One issue about this effect is the UI: the user should be able to choose which crossings are positive, which are negative...
The easiest way seems to have a string parameter like "++-+-" giving the sign of the crossings in the order they appear on the path... but I am still looking for better ideas!
As for the sketch effect, it depends on many choices that will always be improvable: releasing it without freezing it will be a real challenge!...
