Hi,
the font selection dropdown doesn't work on windows, at least in Inkscape21345-0905140303 on Windows Vista. When the dropdown is opened, an inkscape.exe task appears on the taskbar as if the process was running outside of the Inkscape main window. Selecting fonts has no effect on the typed text.

hmm, I'm running the same version on Windows XP. I can confirm the additional task in the task bar, which is very strange. The new task is called Inkscape.exe in the Task Manager. However, my text is responding appropriately when I change the font. The problem I have is that the font name in the dropdown box reverts back to the previous value, but the text on the screen behaves as expected.
Is your text highlighted or selected when you change the font?

yes, the text is selected. But when I change the font in the dropdown, it has no effect on the text at all, the selected font is not applied to the text at all...

I have that problem too. I'm always forced to use Shift+Ctrl+T to change font.

Actually, I have the same problem in Linux (ver 21439); I generally type text and then modify it with the Text Dialogue so I don't know when this started, but currently the font dropdown does nothing. Additionally, it does not go away when a font is clicked or double clicked, I have to click away from the menu to get rid of it. The font size dropdown works fine.

I had a similar problem a while back. I added the font Bitstream Vera Sans (or all of the Bitstream fonts) to my OS (Ubuntu and Windows), restarted Inkscape and all my problems went away. After that I was able to select fonts from the drop down again in 0.46.

Thanks, but I've had the Bitstream fonts installed for some time, so that's not it.
Hm, it works! at least for me. I install only one font from archive on my machine - vera.ttf - and voila - it works like a charm!. Thanks for solution! Thomas - maybe you should try again? ;)

Well, it's not actually bothering me at the moment and I think the main thing is that it points up that something somewhere is going awry if one has to install a specific font to make the drop down work. I really just wanted to point up the fact that it wasn't just a Windows issue.
I don't have that font installed, and it works for me (svn 21415 on XP). I have about 2000 fonts installed, maybe another one does the trick :-)
It did however not work for me a while back.
A side remark: It would be nice if the list could be browsed with arrow keys.

Hmm, weird.
It worked yesterday, I could select fonts from the drop down list, and no extra Inscape process started (did I check for the extra process carefully enough?). I was checking on a small design, that I had already been working on for long time.
Today, I have the same font selection problem as described, and I can see an extra process started, when I open the dropdown menu.
