Re: [Inkscape-devel] 0.92 release status
I agree with everything Bryce said. Most of that was merely time constraints. There's a lot I would change tbh, mostly tweaking and timing of things. It was a challenge to get everything in there, and a lot of the issue had to do with syncing the action with the music properly.
It was a great learning experience, and the things suggested will certainly be fixed on the next version.
Thanks for the input and encouragement! -C

Thanks Martin! No, it was never posted, but I think it's because some of the features were (and are still) under development and have been disabled or excluded for this release. It was adequate to get folks from the conference excited and downloading our trunk versions for testing, but for a public release, I'd like to be a bit more accurate about what's new and included.
Wow, that's amazing. I agree with everyone else, this'd be an excellent thing to showcase and help promote the release.
The good news about that is we can re-use most of it, so not everything needs to be re-done. Since it never got posted, the revisions will not seem like just a re-post of the original video... which saves me a lot of work during this relatively busy time of year, leading up to the holiday season. :)
I'm happy to have anyone advise features that are not in this video to include, or exclude as the case may be.
The way it showcased the features in real time was pretty stunning. The one that stuck with me the most was the on-canvas gradient editing, I suppose because it involved shiny color. The font measurement stuff was amazing too, maybe because I'm a sucker for dimensions. :-)
The new guide features went by a bit too quickly to grok what the change was. The setup part for node tool dropdown was a bit slow, but when it got to the actual feature it jumped too quickly so it's hard to see what the actual feature was.
The symbol dialog, find with mouse wheel, and paint order examples felt spot on. Live path effects as well, however I know there's been a *ton* of cool work here and wonder if this section could be expanded. Drag and drop layer ordering looked pretty slick but I didn't follow what exactly was going on.
For the new file format support, I wonder if it would be permissible to include the logos of the respective products? Differentiating between the import and exports might be worthwhile. Some of those, like visio import, I thought we had for a while? In any case, showing off new file import and export features is a great idea.
I'm also quite proud to be part of the Inkscape project, and it's the sense of community and family that motivates me to create these video works, graphics, and ui stuff.
I like how this video focuses on the product itself, and I think it is way stronger having that focus. But I do wonder if having a similar video but more focused on the people involved might be fun -- something geared more towards people who might dabble with more involvement in our community. Something that'd mention the hackfest, LGM attendance, more depth into the new website features, and details of how we've put donor's funds to use in the Books For Developers effort, and so on.
I'm happy that it shows in the video, and it's thanks to all of you that it does. :) Oh, also maybe we should have a special thanks portion at the end of the video for those in the project that have (and continue to) really bend over backwards to get this release out the door. I know I can think of a bunch.
It was very striking that the video didn't end with a credits roll, but instead used that time to give focus to the project logo and slogan. It made the whole seem simultaneously professional and accessible. It'd be fine with me either way, but do I like the tidy way you closed it.
Bryce
Thoughts?

PS- I don't want to be included on this special thanks screen. I think it should be reserved for those who contributed most to the release, and I've mainly just been a cheerleader for it thus far. :)

Did it ever get posted to the inkscape website? When the new one is ready, we should add it to youtube and then onto the website as an embeded video and then into news and other PR outlets.
Thanks for brining this up.

Regarding outeach and PR, remember, we have a video that we displayed at the LGM conference. It got a lot of applause, and a suggestion from the speaker to the audience that everyone consider doing a video next year. *^.^*
I can revise it to replace features that did not make it into the 0.93 release, and replace them with features that did make it in. For reference, the video is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/67wva0mryutll7d/inkscape_lgm_video_2016_fin ished.ogv?dl=0
Other things that need replacing is the 0.91 > 0.92, and the screenshot of the website after we know what the new artwork from the about screen contest is. :)
Any updates would be helpful towards this goal.
Thanks! -C

There is a list of past releases on the releases page. But perhaps you'd like a page that shows a more robust list with descriptions and such?
https://inkscape.org/en/release/0.91/
See list of 'Versions' and 'In development', it's a fairly complete list.
I've noticed the development snapshots often want to have additional directions or tips, which can look a bit cluttery / jargony and thus potentially a big source of confusion.
In any case, probably not worth overthinking here, especially given that there's a new releases app coming. The main thing is to keep things looking neat & tidy for the release.
If you can force the use of the releases app, it'll force fixes and tweaks. Otherwise I fear a cms downloads page will continue to be a toxic workaround stopping us from finishing the app.
select it instead of their platform page...
Ah, yeah we had the same thought. :-)
I don't understand.
- Martin created some for 0.91 and the pre-releases - maybe
he's still got the file? Here are a couple of examples: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=inkscape-package/
Yeah would be nice to get that into the inkscape bzr tree, then perhaps I could make it part of the release process to make a copy with the new version number, that can then be used on all the uploads.
Makes sense, a useful image for each of these things. I'm trying to make the about page art more universal by updating different parts of the website with the art too. I'd like these icons to use the art is possible too.
So pre-about screen we'd use the standard developer/pre-release graphics.

Also, I was thinking an interview style video would be great. Maybe as a separate video. Team members could talk about their motivation for working in the project, and share some cool time lapse screen shots of their work, which we could mix in. For now, obviously the focus should be on the feature video for 0.92, but after that, let's discuss other options.
I'd also like to do some similar artist videos to showcase some of the outstanding work from the professional artist user community.
The former would be to attract new developers to the project and give users a window in on the fine folks that bring them this excellent software. It would have the feeling of a behind the scenes video. The latter to attract new users, and show off what people do with Inkscape in the real world, and in production environments.
More on that later though. :) -C
