0.47 X11 on Mac OS X Tiger - close to success?

Hello friends,
with a great effort of ~suv I came to a finished compiling procedure of 0.47 X11 for Tiger. The only not-so-nice thing is that neither the package nor the bin will start.
The bin shows in terminal:
(inkscape:344): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
So I did
export DISPLAY=:0 dsl01:~ bub$ cd Desktop/inkscape-0.47-x11/build/bin/ dsl01:~/Desktop/inkscape-0.47-x11/build/bin bub$ ./inkscape
but came to the same result: X11 doesnt start.
Below I paste console.log - looks as if still some aqua component were in the game - argh !
Yours,
Wolf

Did you really configure/compile it with '--enable-osxapp'? If so, you couldn't launch it the way you did, because it needs the launcher scripts to set the environment for X11 and all resources that are included in the bundle and to launch X11.
If you did configure it to run as bundled osx application (with '--enable-osxapp'), you have to launch it by double-click on the app icon in the Finder or using the *full* path like:
$ /Users/bub/Desktop/inkscape-0.47-x11/packaging/macosx/Inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/Inkscape
(change the path to your just built application bundle accordingly, and don't forget to set $DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH in the second launcher script 'Contents/Resources/bin/inkscape' before launching it)
but came to the same result: X11 doesnt start.

no - that's normal output for the X11 version.

Yes - so did I.
But double-clicking the .app didnt work either. Launches X11 - and than stops. But I got another console message:

(inkscape-bin:525): Gtk-WARNING **: Im Modulpfad »clearlooks« konnte keine Themen-Engine gefunden werden,
We had that clearlooks issue before - and it came up during compiling, so I did what JiHO recommended:
I would suggest to comment lines 156 to 159 in osx-app.sh and try again.
This worked for aqua, but may have been a silly idea for X11. But there is no clearlooks port available… - so what can we do?
Greetings,
Wolf

http://www.macports.org/ports.php?by=name&substr=clearlooks ?
Doesn't 'gtk2-clearlooks' work on Tiger? Else you could try 'gtk-engines2' - afair it includes a newer version of the clearlooks engine (or an older version, I don't remember). But you can't have both ports installed and active at the same time, that results in a conflict.

There is no google hit for "Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0". Mac OS X" - so sorry - I have to bother you again…

That warning doesn't prevent Inkscape from launching. It just says that the X server doesn't have the extension. You don't need it.
On Leopard, with a recent X11/Xquartz 2.40 installed I see this too:
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-3AIizG/:0".
If Inkscape fails to launch, it must be for another reason.
~suv
(I could provide links to mails in the X11-users or xquartz-dev mailing lists about 'RANDR' if needed, atm I haven't searched for them ;-)

Jeremy Huddleston (developer of current X11/Xquartz versions for Apple) in macports-users:
It definitely is just a warning. It occurs whenever an app tries to query the RANDR extension. It notices that the extension is missing and disables whatever optional support it would've had for that extension. gtk2 based applications will do this every time they start... probably any app that uses a toolkit higher level than libXt, libXaw, or motif will omit such a message.

Interesting to watch is that according to "top" inkscape-bin grabs 90% of CPU power and stays on that for many minutes (tried it for nearly 40 minutes).
Hm.

nevermind - if you looked at system.log you saw all there is... (on Leopard: in 'Console.app' menu 'View > Log List', in the log list (sidebar on the left) expand the top most entry 'LOG DATABASE QUERIES' and select 'All Messages')

I'm clueless at the moment. What you could try to get more data while inkscape-bin is running:
1) open 'Activity Monitor' (graphical 'top') 2) select 'inkscape-bin' 3) 'View > Inspect Process', select 'Open Files and Ports' look at the list for any suspicious files inkscape-bin loads from outside the application bundle 5) 'View > Sample Process', save the result as text file and attach it, maybe it helps to determine where inkscape-bin hangs
Another thing you could test: rename (temporarily) your MacPorts tree '/opt/local' so that Inkscape can't load any files from there.

- 'View > Sample Process', save the result as text file and attach
it, maybe it helps to determine where inkscape-bin hangs
"Prozeß-Analyse" in German? - Is attached as a file.
Another thing you could test: rename (temporarily) your MacPorts tree '/opt/local' so that Inkscape can't load any files from there.
Doesnt matter.
Thanks for your support - does it make sense to put it on my server, so other people could have a look on it?
Greetings,
Wolf

Interesting to watch is that according to "top" inkscape-bin grabs 90% of CPU power and stays on that for many minutes (tried it for nearly 40 minutes).
I'm clueless at the moment. What you could try to get more data while inkscape-bin is running:
- open 'Activity Monitor' (graphical 'top')
- select 'inkscape-bin'
- 'View > Inspect Process', select 'Open Files and Ports' look at the list for any suspicious files inkscape-bin loads from outside the application bundle
Assuming you mean "Prozeß-Information" in the German version, I paste it here - as I will not be able to make any sense from that:
<snip>
looks ok as far as I can tell. Loads the same libs from the bundle, and a lot more from '/System/Library/{CoreServices|Frameworks}' then 0.47 on Leopard, but this could be due to the differences between Tiger and Leopard?

compare yours to the attached process samples of http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.macports.devel/10079 and http://trac.macports.org/ticket/21679, which is a duplicate of http://trac.macports.org/ticket/21624
Which version of pango do you have installed? If it's 1.26.0, try this fix:
| Deactivated pango 1.26.0, reactivated pango 1.24.5, rebuilt all of | pango's direct dependents and then inkscape

Wow. One more time I'm impressed. That's what I found:
port installed pango The following ports are currently installed: pango @1.24.5_0+macosx+no_x11+quartz pango @1.26.0_0+macosx (active) dsl01:~ bub$ port deps pango Full Name: pango @1.26.0+macosx Library Dependencies: glib2, Xft2, cairo Extract Dependencies: pkgconfig
So probabely the quartz version is working because pango–quartz is older than pango_X11. Which of these deps do you mean by "direct deps"?
I'll check that tomorrow, all of this day I'm out - saving the danube river.
Yours respectfully ((-;

I copied those instructions from the comments of one of the macports tickets: AFAIU it's not about 'port deps' but 'port dependents'. In my (still using outdated MacPorts v1.710) MacPorts tree I have these:
| LeWitt:~ suv$ port installed pango | The following ports are currently installed: | pango @1.24.5_0+macosx (active) | LeWitt:~ suv$ port dependents pango | pangomm depends on pango | gtk2 depends on pango | libgnomeprint depends on pango | graphviz depends on pango | dia depends on pango | LeWitt:~ suv$
... and for Inkscape I would rebuild at least pangomm, gtk2, libgnomeprint, (graphviz if you compile Inkscape with ImageMagick) after pango @1.24.5_0+macosx is installed and activated.
Your first problem however will be to get an older version of pango installed (you can't just 'port activate pango@...2290...+macosx' because it never was installed) - there are some detailed instructions in http://trac.macports.org/ticket/21678 about using a local portfile, but you might get better support for this in 'macports-users'.

p.s. I just saw that Ryan answered your question already there... Keep us updated how it goes! ;)

Dear friends,
on
http://verkehrsplanung.com/Inkscape047-X11-ppc.app.zip
my attempt in building a 0.47 X11 on Tiger can be visited. It is PPC only - are there people around who need Tiger-Intel?
A pity is that keyboard shortcuts are no longer displayed within the tiny text popup boxes, which occur when you place the mouse over a tool at the left hand side tool bar.
Thanks a lot to our friend ~suv, who guided every of my very wobbly steps with great skill and patience.
Will the experts please let me know which set of sources I shall use for an "official" release?
Thanks and greetings,
Wolf

*ping* - no one with an old Tiger PPC around to test?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean - inkscape sources or MacPorts dependencies or ?
~suv (who tried to run it on Leopard i386 (still has Rosetta) - with mixed results: the main window comes up as long as I don't allow inkscape-bin to load any font resources, gdk-pixbuf modules/loaders etc. but then it is not really usable ;)
p.s. (un-?)related question to those who know: does inkscape require librsvg installed or use it in any way if installed?

Below I paste console.log - looks as if still some aqua component were in the game - argh !
2009-12-03 10:45:22.223 defaults[385] The domain/default pair of (kCFPreferencesAnyApplication, AppleAquaColorVariant) does not exist 2009-12-03 10:45:22.260 defaults[386] The domain/default pair of (kCFPreferencesAnyApplication, AppleHighlightColor) does not exist
to briefly explain these messages from the 'defaults' command:
Every time Inkscape.app is launched it checks the user preferences for the color settings of 'System Preferences > Appearance' and adapts the GTK+ theme of Inkscape to use the same color scheme as the user has set for the overall OS X Aqua appearance.
If you never changed the defaults, the settings are not stored explicitly and the 'defaults' command can't find custom preferences for the Aqua color settings.
You can avoid these messages if you once change the Appearance and Highlight Color in the System Preferences and then change them back to the values you used before. Now 'AppleAquaColorVariant' and 'AppleHighlightColor' are stored explicitly in the user preferences and 'default' no longer produces these warnings.
