Hey Devs,
We're testing live over at http://py1.osuosl.org/ please register a new account for yourself and I will enabled your editing capabilities.
Please do not edit http://staging.inkscape.org any more unless you want to test edits. These edits will be periodically overwritten with data from the new live instance.
We're waiting on the masters of the DNS to change over www.inkscape.org when ready. In the meantime, please give the new live a test and please let me know if you find issues.
Best Regards, Martin Owens

Is it the registration email really suppose to point to example.com?

I've fixed it. I've also enabled all you guys as admins etc.
My activation email, just now, still pointed to example.com.

I've gone ahead and placed the request for the DNS change.
For reference, the old site will still be accessible at http://140.211.166.38/. Anyone know if there are other domain names pointed at this IP address?
At some point I suppose we should turn the old site off, so no one can run into it accidentally and get outdated info. The old content will always be available via SF's SVN archive.
Btw, is the new site's drupal files/configuration/etc. stored in version control somewhere? Also, is the database content backed up somewhere we can get at it in case osuosl burns down?

The project is in two halfs, one is the site itself:
It's python/django/cms and available in the launchpad project inkscape-web
The second is the cms content. That's almost all of the content, minus frames, logos and style sheets. That means the vast majority of the content can be edited and translated institute on site.
Backups are made each night. They're made available for download here:
http://py1.osuosl.org/media/content.json.gz
Feel free to set up your own cron to download the file for safe keeping. There's a small date range for the backup too because the cms has no undo like the wiki. So recovering edits can only really be done via the backups.

Out of curiosity, is it planned to deploy 301 redirects from old pages?

Hey there,
No need to bother OSL for this, I've just installed django.contrib.redirects on live and staging.
Please go into the admin interface http://inkscape.org/admin and login (if you're using google/yahoo, login before hand)
Look for the Redirects section and look at the gallery redirect I've already made as an example.
I'll mark the bug resolved now.

The login requests are POST requests, although are http so don't use important passwords.
The error reported by Krzysztof was for the very old dev.inkscape.org which looked exactly like stagining.inkscape.org but without any code sitting behind it. It was a sort of puppet website to show what the design was capable of doing. And slipped through the cracks when the websites development passed between developers.
dev.inkscape.org is now offline to prevent future confusions and points to the old inkscape.org website.... Although that might also be confusing ;-)

It's there, I just tested it for you. Added a blocking bugs widget to one of the pages and then removed it. It's not the easiest widget to use being a launchpad intergration and all. But play around with it on staging if you're not sure.
I found two link bugs:
- The big "Inkscape" text next to the big logo still points to
staging.inkscape.org.
Fixed for english, will probably have to be fixed for each translation. Just edit the homepage and edit the title box text widget. be sure to edit in html mode as links aren't editable in the visual editor of the cms.
- here http://py1.osuosl.org/en/developers/, the bug management link

That'll be content. I'll let you fix that once you've...

Registered for a new account. It's a new website and the staging user account should still be there too. Let me know I'll enable you for editing too.
Martin,
Hi,
I tested the new site (quite exhaustively) and I found a few problems :
-Landing page : about and download buttons, on the image, point to staging.inkscape
-Search page (e.g. http://inkscape.org/en/search/?q=test ): the flag is broken
-About > screenshots : maybe more screenshots would be better (screenshots of some features ?)
-Download > addons : nothing here ?
-Community : dead link to planet.inkscape.org maybe add some more sentences -Community > chat now : add in the IRC paragraph that the chatbox above is exactly going to IRC ^^ International and local communities : maybe directly add the wiki links rather than just putting a link to the wiki ? -Community > Gallery : Cooooooool !
-Learn : the paragraph "In addition there are many great sites online where users post finished projects, tutorials, and questions:" may be better to redirect to the "Community" section, and put the links there
-Learn > tutorials : All inkscape.org/doc/ are dead links (!) -Learn > FAQ : tldr, but should be ok if it is roughly the same as in the old website. -Learn > videos : why not embed some (or all) of the videos ? -Learn > Books : show the book covers ?
-Contribute > Testing : a few dead links to inkscape.org/wiki and to other sites (most of the links here are dead) -Contribute > Contributor stats : can't we "embed" the list ? Is this section really neccessary ?
-Develop : not-links ">here<" (x4) -Develop > debugging : Is this page really necessary ? (info on how to use gdb for a crash is already on a page)
~~~~~~
-French translation : a lot of other problems, empty pages or not yet translated. I can help if needed :)
Hey Marc,
Most of these issues can be fixed by an editor such as yourself. I've enabled the editing process for you and you can read some documentation on how to edit the new website here:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WebSite
Not sure what the missing flag is for the search page, can you explain?
Hey Marc,
Most of these issues can be fixed by an editor such as yourself. I've enabled the editing process for you and you can read some documentation on how to edit the new website here:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WebSite
Not sure what the missing flag is for the search page, can you explain?
Martin,
Hi,
I tested the new site (quite exhaustively) and I found a few problems :
-Landing page : about and download buttons, on the image, point to staging.inkscape
-Search page (e.g. http://inkscape.org/en/search/?q=test ): the flag is broken
-About > screenshots : maybe more screenshots would be better (screenshots of some features ?)
-Download > addons : nothing here ?
Someone might hoverover the Download link and not realize you have to click "on" it. This is probably going to be the most widely used bit of the site, so the more foolproof the better.
What if we add menu items 'Linux', 'Windows', and 'Mac', leading to pages specific to each of those platforms. Maybe a 'Source' link as well.
-Community : dead link to planet.inkscape.org maybe add some more sentences -Community > chat now : add in the IRC paragraph that the chatbox above is exactly going to IRC ^^ International and local communities : maybe directly add the wiki links rather than just putting a link to the wiki ?
-Community > Gallery : Cooooooool !
-Learn : the paragraph "In addition there are many great sites online where users post finished projects, tutorials, and questions:" may be better to redirect to the "Community" section, and put the links there
-Learn > tutorials : All inkscape.org/doc/ are dead links (!) -Learn > FAQ : tldr, but should be ok if it is roughly the same as in the old website.
The FAQ's gotten to be kind of a wall of text. Probably would benefit from some heavyhanded editing. A lot of its info probably would be better living in the wiki.
-Learn > videos : why not embed some (or all) of the videos ? -Learn > Books : show the book covers ?
-Contribute > Testing : a few dead links to inkscape.org/wiki and to other sites (most of the links here are dead) -Contribute > Contributor stats : can't we "embed" the list ? Is this section really neccessary ?
The data's easy enough to find from launchpad, you're probably right this additional link probably isn't necessary.
-Develop : not-links ">here<" (x4) -Develop > debugging : Is this page really necessary ? (info on how to use gdb for a crash is already on a page)
Debugging is an important topic, but I could see this living instead in wiki. Something more end-user focused (like a paint-by-numbers gdb guide) could be worth having on the site proper, but might be better somewhere under Contribute.
