Hi,
Folks from GNOME design team just asked me about ways to "hide" unused assets like templates and color swatches, so out of interest I've had a look, and it seems to me that indeed we could let go of some stuff. E.g. for templates that would be:
- all desktop_* except probably 1600x1200 (640x480 is useful in 2012? for real?) - no_borders and no_layers (sounds like someone should just need to master custom templates) - default_mm and default_pt (same as above) - fontforge_glyph (obsoleted by typography_canvas)
What do you think?

Yeah, I do think it's time to go through and clean house a little bit. I guess a side Q is, do we replace some of those desktop ones with their current day equivalents? Such as the ever so common 1366x768.
Cheers, Josh

Oh yeahm, and then we could add 128, 256 and 512px icons templates, and cover iPads, iPhones, Kindles, Nukes... (someone, slap my face quickly!)
In my never an humble opinion it's a templates abuse :)
We have a bunch of presets for page size in Documents Properties dialog. That's where it should go. We could even make that part of the dialog more usable, with less scrolling. Think the new shortcuts configuration UI and expanders for grouping.

+1
I've never use templates much, except for a few repetitive tasks I do, and I had to create my custom templates for that (DV Pal video with safe areas, for instance). A long list of templates is kind of overwhelming and makes it difficult to find the right one, so for everyday work I tend to just edit my document properties and that's it.
Just to clarify: this is not saying that templates aren't useful. They really are, but the overly long list makes them less handy.
In my opinion, kicking most of them out and adding a tutorial page saying how to create them would be far better than having dozens of them. But probably adding another tutorial page in the help section isn't an option.
On the other hand a good UI for template creation would be a good addition to inkscape.

If we could have nested templates folders... I'd want all templates nested under these categories

That looks like a better idea.
Deletion is usually less desirable than better organization.

There are several places where nested template folders would be useful (coupled with automatically generating the menu entries). The only problem I see, is figuring out how Internationalization would be done. Perhaps a good GSOC project?
