Supporting Inkscape: What are the best ways?
Hey folks. So I've recently branched out into several FLOSS communities, and so I'm exposed to a lot more wishlist items. Generelly they are things on the roadmap, and many have to do with the SVG spec.
When someone expresses a need for *x-feature* I generally send them to this page to help: https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/svg-standards-work/
I was wondering if this is the best thing to do.
I get a lot of requests to help the project from people who I help get to grips with Inkscape and other FLOSS.
Can someone provide a list of current links to parts of the project that need financial aide? I can sort out who to send where (based on the features they are interested in). But a comprehensive list of donation links would be awesome. :)
Thanks! -C
I've heard from a few different people myself, who are just dying to donate to Inkscape, but can't find a satisfying way to do it. Most of they want Inkscape listed in their favorite crowd funding type of site. Like they set aside a certain amount of their income on one site, and divide it up among all the projects they want to support. But there are several of those.
I wonder if it would work for 1 person to sort of adopt such a project, whose job is to maintain accounts in a few of those places? Not that I can volunteer for that myself.
For now, I just refer them to the Support Us page https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/ Wish I had a better answer.
All best, brynn

A patreon account should be our first port of call, we can make an announcement on all our social media and see how much money we can get per month.
It's be easier to do if we were indie, but for now we'll have to go through the Conservancy.
Bryce can you add this to the board meeting, I'd like to get some solid actions planned, because I think we need to get on with the collecting rather than the 'figuring out how to spend' part which we often get bogged down in.
Martin,

Yes, totally agreed. I'll make this top item for the meeting in a couple weeks.
Meanwhile, to answer the immediate question there are 3 ways to donate currently:
1. Inkscape Hackfests. We've held two so far, which have paid off in pushing forward the features and infrastructure changes that you'll be enjoying in 0.92. We looked into hosting another in Portland, Oregon, but that has to wait for now. Our funding for hackfests is a bit depleted at the moment, so contributions here will be well used and quite welcomed.
https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/hackfests/
2. Donate to support the SVG Standards Work. Specifically, this funds sending Tav to W3C's Scalable Vector Graphics standardization meetings. This is a long term investment, but one that benefits the whole open graphics community, not just Inkscape.
https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/svg-standards-work/
3. The General Fund. You can also just donate to the project's general fund. The Inkscape Board uses these funds to cover a wide range of goals both small and large to improve Inkscape, including events, programming book purchases, and more. (We're always looking for effective ways to invest Inkscape donors' contributions in ways that benefit the project - bring your ideas to the next board meeting.)
https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/donate/
We're also extremely interested in opening additional fundraising opportunities. Merchandise sales, for instance. The trick is having someone to organize and set things up. The work isn't hard or technical but it can be quite time consuming. If you haven't programming skills but you do have ample time and patience this could be a huge way to tangibly help the project.
Longer term, we are looking at setting up web software that enables people to directly contribute to specific development efforts. If you have experience doing Django development (or want to gain experience), and help develop this tool, please give me a holler. Once the release is out the door this is going to become my #1 focus.
Bryce
Hi Bryce,
I'm a frontend dev with experience in Django. =)
I've downloaded the VM, but haven't gotten around to playing with it yet. I'd be up for joining you if you do a Hackfest soon. -- Frédéric Guimont, Consultant en logiciels libres Savoir-faire Linux
