hello,
It's been a good long while since I've emailed the mailing list I am a part of the server management involving inkscape and have been for approximately 4+ years. I am writing you today for 2 reasons.
1. Our current site is terrible, I'm sorry but there is no chance of just brushing over it. I know there have been a fair number of people in the past 2 years who have submitted website mockup ideas and we've had contests but no one has ever followed through. Which I'll take partial blame for it. Things are just scattered every which way 2. I wanted to update you on the status of the Test suite, Osuosl is currently in the process of setting up the ability to run test suites so that we can test the SVG building more efficiently. So stay tuned for more info on this in the near future.
Anyway back to problem 1. Here's how I think we can best solve this problem. We're going to break the website into different categories and duties.
1. UI (mockups) (*ARTIST*/PROGRAMMERS*) - Ability to make mockups of how you think the website should look. - After we pick yours we will request to see the top couple in HTML/CSS 2. Artwork for the website (*ARTIST*) - Ability to develop / sharpen logos as well as various buttons etc as needed 3. Drupal Modules (*PROGRAMMERS*) - Skills required - Knowledge of Mysql/PHP/JS and HTML - Knowledge or ability to learn how drupal works 4. Documentation (*WRITERS*) - Skills - Moderate knowledge and ability to update and port existing content over to the new site. 5. Translation
- We need people who specialize in various languages to port content once completed into the various languages.
So what's wrong with the current design? a lot, it's way too cluttered and disorganized not to mention you click wiki you go to a whole different navigation and sub site. That is just a pain to deal with as a user. So if you have skills in 1 of the above 5 categories, please contact me or the list directly and we'll assemble the a team and get this going! let me know what you think.... Thanks, Ian "Inc" C.
to add further, we're not all good at design and we're not all good at programming, or writing, that's why it takes all types of different people in order to make a project work. This is an opportunity for everyone to pitch in!

Hi Ian,
PHP is not my preferred language but i have some knowledge and i think i can say i'm good with Javascript. I can help to build the new website.
You talk about the wiki interface... yeah, that is right. What you propose? Copy the Drupal layout to the Mediawiki or to move the wiki to the drupal? I think Drupal has a wiki, right? So i vote to put all inside Drupal. One tool to manage = more easy to manage.

Hello,
about 1. the site
I think this is a good initiative to be noticed in the users list cause it's more likely that inkscape users can be designers and web programmers ;)
About the project itself, I would like to remark that you can count on me for all the work: - mockups, illustrations, buttons, navigation - hosting permanently or temporally (for development) - developing, theming, configuration for Drupal (I'm not a pro with drupal but can get help outside)
And to end up I want to expose one worry but I hope it doesn't become a flamewar :/ , here it goes:
I would like to be take into account the possibility to develop a new Inkscape site with Django. For this main reasons: - It can boost integration and development of functionalities Inkscape needs. - Using Django will drastically reduce maintainers work in security updates. - Performance - Design freedom
By no means I am against Drupal cms or Drupal community, It's just I worked for more than 4 years in Drupal based sites (and still do) and I'm personally tired of updates and strange pseudo-oo api and no html templates for full creativity. I feel somebody else can be tired like me, maybe I'm wrong. If moving from Drupal it's outside the scope of the project just don't give my worry a second thought. You can count on me anyway in making a nice site for Inkscape with whatever is choosen.
Cheers, Néstor

+1 for Django
For people not familiar with Django, here's my Django sales talk:
It's more-or-less the best Python-based web-framework (ok, that's not intended to be flamebait, so don't bite). It's simple to write code for, and simple even if you don't want to do much coding. It's a little more work to deploy than vanilla PHP, but by no means difficult, and probably no harder than Drupal. Definitely worth the time it takes.
It has a nice, simple-but-full-featured template system, a very nice ORM database system, lots of built-in utilities, and lots of 3rd-party packages. It's incredibly well-documented. The turnaround time involved in adding new features to your website is very quick. It even gets the thumbs-up from Guido, BDFL.
It's simple, pythonic, and doesn't try and force you into a particular way of doing things, but on the other hand, it does provide all the tools you'd need to build a fully-featured website, wiki, blog, anything else you'd ever need. You do have to learn "the Django way" to some extent, but basically it's the same as "the Python way" -- at any rate, it's not as easy to write messy, ad-hoc code as PHP. 95% of your code naturally ends up in well-structured python modules, which can be re-used even outside of the Django framework.
And plus, you get a robust, fully-featured, general-purpose programming language. And your website would be written in the same language as most of the Inkscape extensions, FWIW.

I've worked a bit with Zope/Plone and found it not easy unless you want to spend a big pile of time learning a ton of stuff. By contrast I'm now using Django and find it extremely well documented, easy to understand, and very productive.
Of course, if the people so generously hosting the site are Drupal people, that makes sense, I'm just saying that Python framework wise Django is very nice.

ok, A lot of great points have been made. Let's go ahead and start with the issue of the website not updating. That was taken care of today via SSL. In the future please Email myself with your trickets, as it's better to do support emails from one collection point vs's multiple. I have taken care of the issue, and it allows for things to be fixed faster. As for the django. I like the idea, of it, However it needs to have a few things in mind if we go ahead and deploy the site in Django. #1. It needs to be easy to update as needed, #2. code needs to be well commented so Joe blow of the street ten years from now should be able to understand the code or at least read the comments. also it needs to be able to be expandable, have built in comments, admin, localization, news, pages etc all of that. Also osuosl currently manages sqlite and mysql servers specifically for high load sites, ARe you able to work the database into that? I like the idea of drupal because of how easy it is to add accounts and collaborate on adding pages news etc.... Let me know what you think. Also I have started gathering names and will email you all individually as we make a plan. Thanks, Ian On Tue, Nov 23, 2010 at 1:27 PM, Bryan Hoyt | Brush Technology < bryan@...2310...> wrote:

Anyway back to problem 1. Here's how I think we
can best solve this problem.
We're going to break the website into different
categories and duties.
1. UI (mockups)
(*ARTIST*/PROGRAMMERS*)
- Ability to make
mockups of how you think the website should look.
- After we pick yours
we will request to see the top couple in
HTML/CSS 2. Artwork for the website
(*ARTIST*)
- Ability to develop /
sharpen logos as well as various buttons etc as
needed 3. Drupal Modules
(*PROGRAMMERS*)
- Skills required - Knowledge of
Mysql/PHP/JS and HTML
-
Knowledge or ability to learn how drupal works
4. Documentation
(*WRITERS*)
- Skills -
Moderate knowledge and ability to update and port existing
content over to the new site.
5. Translation
I'm sorry, but I don't understand any of this. What do
you mean by
breaking the site into that?
Also, if you uintend to work on the new website (which
is most
welcome) you really want to start from list of
requitements, not
design.

As for the django. I like the idea, of it, However it needs to have a few things in mind if we go ahead and deploy the site in Django.
#1. It needs to be easy to update as needed,
Django can tie in with MySQL quite happily.
#2. code needs to be well commented so Joe blow of the street ten years from now should be able to understand the code or at least read the comments.
That shouldn't be an issue. Django code tends to just make sense.
also it needs to be able to be expandable, have built in comments, admin,
localization, news, pages etc all of that.
The work's been done for that sort of thing.
As for easy updating of content, a web interface is possible, integration with a bzr repository is possible (this would be my favourite way of doing it and would be very simple, actually, as it can then be file-based rather than database-based, which also makes it infinitely easier for searching without depending on the website, and makes things like batch changes trivial), really anything you feel like is possible with a bit of effort. Some things are easier than others, naturally. And when it gets to things like an extensions repository, as discussed earlier - doing it well with Drupal would be difficult but fairly easy with Django, including very good integration with the rest of the site.
Also osuosl currently manages sqlite and mysql servers specifically for high
load sites, ARe you able to work the database into that?
Django can use MySQL quite happily. And concerning load, as we checked last time, OSUOSL are happy with using Django, they just want to be cautious about load. I don't think load will be much of an issue at all; provided the apps used in the project are not written too badly, Django/Python scales better than Drupal/PHP.
I like the idea of drupal because of how easy it is to add accounts and
collaborate on adding pages news etc....
No one would use Django if things like that couldn't be done easily.
We could even tie in OSQA - http://www.osqa.net/ - and get a Stack Overflow-like system. (That would really be a very suitable medium for Inkscape questions, I think. Better than the traditional forum model.) And the beauty of Django is that you can connect that to the rest - it doesn't need to be separate applications that you try to integrate, you dump the apps it uses into the project and it all Works. (Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried deploying OSQA yet.)

+1 for Django
Thinking about it, I should just qualify my previous note a bit. As a python web app. framework I think Django is great. As a content management system (CMS) / community site system I think Plone and I suspect Drupal are more mature / feature complete. I'm using django-cms and I really like it for developing a website which looks like a "regular website", i.e. doesn't present itself as a community site with members and postings. I've used Plone for more "community driven" sites, and it's been kind of a PITA because when things don't work / need tweaking it takes forever to work out how (although I'm sure it's only a learning curve issue, no doubt Plone is very easy for Plone gurus). But it does have a full set of features and a non-tech. friendly interface.
There are django plugins for blogs / wikis / message boards etc. etc. but I don't think there's a single install turnkey system like you get with Plone (despite my not liking it) and I think Drupal (which I don't really know).
Cheers -Terry
My outside impressions of Plone aren't that great. I "just got" Django, even before I'd used it. But even after installing and trying to set up a vanilla site on Plone, I didn't really understand the need for all the complexity and difficulty to extend.
I think Django has enough ready-to-go packages that we could put together, so that we don't really need a monolithic turnkey system. I think the advantages of easy customisation/development far outweigh the disadvantages of not having an instant shrink-wrapped system.
A good comparison would be SVG filters vs. Xara LX's prefabricated effects. Except that Xara's effects are actually easy to deploy & use, whereas Plone isn't always.

Wiki page for the analysis?
Then, we can discuss if django-cms, our mashup of django apps or http://mezzanine.jupo.org/ (the new guy in the pack) as starting point.
Another thing, I don't know how the actual site was made, but in my opinion the new one should be "directed" by one and only one person or else everybody will ask for every functionality and opinions about shades of green will start to slow down the project. Sorry if it sounds harsh, english is not my first language.
A couple of phase can get us to our objective, not everything in one go. IMHO

In my personal opinion its fairly self explanatory and kinks will be worked out as we get to them however we have yet to dive into content think of this as installing a theme with 0 content and then building the content pages etc if you'd like to initiate a list of requirements to throw on a page feel free to do so or email them here...

I agree with Ian re mockups vs. requirements. Mockups are usually a very good way to collect requirements, because people can *see* what's in the offering.
In the non-OSS world, I do a lot of specifications documents, and people *just don't get* verbal/written specs, no matter how literate they are. But a wireframe "screenshot" showing a set of features always gets people talking. "Can we have a button to ask for donations?", "Where's the menu for the forum?", "What about a sign-up-to-our-newsletter box?" etc.
That said, shouldn't we keep mockups very basic initially -- not much more than wireframes -- and then worry about graphic design? We don't want 10 people to waste their time designing awesome features that nobody wants.

If no one else will (I'm lazy :P), I can set up a Django environment on my server and tie it in with a bzr repository on Launchpad. (hg has support for INI-based hooks, but bzr's are crippled, code-bound things... checked with #launchpad and email-based updates is the best which could be done at the moment).
I think that a repository-based system would be more suitable than a database-backed system (for the reasons I stated earlier), but we can play with that later. Also considering that most of the pages will be static... bzr and Your Favourite Text Editor (viz, vim) is friendlier than a web interface for these sorts of things. Rather like the current content/code is all in SVN. Except with the content and code separated properly this time.

Here's the deal with bZr #1 I personally have never used it... Or heard much about it and fear it's yet another thing devs will have to setup to access such as cvs, svn, git etc

Hi,
I am preparing a site map to get the whole picture of what we need.
I don't find useful to go for a three column design in the front page if want to highlight 4 site areas. I agree with Alexandre on collecting information before deciding in a design. Also, it doesn't involve that people stop sending mockups, it's just many of these won't fit.
I am using this mindmapping online collaborative tool (it's the first time I use it) and I think it can get us to have the work done.
http://www.mindmeister.com/70256281/inkscape-web-site-frontpage
the password is "vectorfun"
Feel free to tweak as much as you want.
And going back to mockups again, I think the announcement for mockups should be done in the inkscape-user(s) list, "where designers live". Nobody has commented on this.

my bad, ok, and yes it has been sent to inkscape user list as well.

Hi,
I am preparing a site map to get the whole picture of what we need.
Cheers, n3storm

I think let's go ahead and started with Phase 1, To me it looks like we're going to have to break this into groups once we get phase 1 knocked out. I have a document spelling out a portion of this. located here https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1K2O-gRdbkP0XATykk6LcPo6O5-JdQzK4QmP... If you have a google account feel free to contact me in IRC via PM (nick: Inc) or email me here your google account so you're able to edit this document. I also created a room in order to allow for a place to talk about development located on IRC on the network: irc.freenode.net in #inkscape-web . What I've got from this is Django is our best bet. One thing to have in mind, is we're going to have to have a universal login for the site, whether it be openid or google accounts whatever. That way users can login and submit their artwork etc. thanks, Ian

I remember that back in 2008 we had simillar discussions - Chris was advocating Django, I wanted Drupal, there was a lot of talk but we ended up with the old site.
Development Seed (http://developmentseed.org/) was offering volunteer work on new inkscape.org site few months ago. Is this proposal still actual? They are one of the best shops you could find - perhaps it would be best to let them lead the development if they agree so.

Our current site is terrible, I'm sorry but there is no chance of just brushing over it. I know there have been a fair number of people in the past 2 years who have submitted website mockup ideas and we've had contests but no one has ever followed through. Which I'll take partial blame for it. Things are just scattered every which way I wanted to update you on the status of the Test suite, Osuosl is currently in the process of setting up the ability to run test suites so that we can test the SVG building more efficiently. So stay tuned for more info on this in the near future.
Anyway back to problem 1. Here's how I think we can best solve this problem. We're going to break the website into different categories and duties.
UI (mockups) (*ARTIST*/PROGRAMMERS*)
Ability to make mockups of how you think the website should look. After we pick yours we will request to see the top couple in HTML/CSS
Artwork for the website (*ARTIST*)
Ability to develop / sharpen logos as well as various buttons etc as needed
Drupal Modules (*PROGRAMMERS*)
Skills required
Knowledge of Mysql/PHP/JS and HTML Knowledge or ability to learn how drupal works
Documentation (*WRITERS*)
Skills
Moderate knowledge and ability to update and port existing content over to the new site.
Translation
We need people who specialize in various languages to port content once completed into the various languages.
Thanks, Ian "Inc" C.

yup, completely understandable. I have contacted the people from developmentseed that originally offered to help with the new website prior to sending this email and I have yet to hear anything back..... so I'm not real hopeful and it's time for us to make a move. So we're starting with mockups. If you have a backway to contact them and they're still willing we're more than willing... Thanks, Ian

Hi,
I wouldn't like the website rebuild to go a drupal-django flamewar as I stated in my first mail :( I though by giving full power to one person in order to organise and achieve the goal the flamewar and other non practical discussions will not take place.
Anyway just to clarify my opinion, I feel thankfull about DevelopmentSeed offer for development, but what worries me more is maintenance and future evolution of the site, which in my experience with Drupal becames painful. Also, the Drupal 6 vs 7 issue is around in my mind as well.
I have analysed the inkscape sitemap and content types and in my next mail I'm sending my conclusions.
I have no access to the google docs yet, can you have a look, Ian?
Cheers, n3storm
