Money, time, time, and design disagreement.
To help with these issues we are raising money for our hackfest soon:
https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/hackfest/
the help from our users really does help move features like this forwards.
Best Regards, Martin Owens

Do you mean that one should be able so select (and keep selected) one or several handles independently from the nodes themselves ? Like in FontForge ?

I think we need some large changes in the node tool: - make handles optionally selectable - write manipulators for rectangles, spiral, star, etc and get rid of knotholder - edit quadratic Beziers and arcs in the node tool
I have some ideas on how to do 1 and 2, but don't know how to allow editing elliptical arcs (i.e. what the control nodes should look like).

I have two things that i have recently wanted too: 1. the ability to delete a handle somehow 2. force the handles of a corner node to be mirrored along the x or y axis -- when i change one handle of the corner node, the other is mirrored -- useful for drawing a shape like a perfect heart shape
--ryanlerch

Ryan,
1) Ctrl+Click a handle to retract/delete it. 2) I second that mirroring request... is there an rfe for it?
Cheers, Josh

Here's a list of related reports (mirrored drawing, symmetric nodes), but so far none found which would _precisely_ match Ryan's request:
* #170703 make node handle "selectable" https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170703
* #171743 Synchronized nodes handles movement https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171743
* #172009 keyboard support to move nodes handles https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/172009
* #245064 Mirrored node movement and definite relative positioning of nodes suggestion https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/245064
* #288146 Align/distribute Bezier node handles https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/288146
* #517966 Feature request: Select, and adjust handles with keyboard. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/517966
* #1132857 Manipulate Bezier handles for multiple nodes simultaneously https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1132857
* #1420856 Support for copying nodes https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1420856

Several Fontforge behaviours for nodes could be interesting to introduce in Inkscape : automatic make vertical or horizontal handles for example. The extremas availability is already a great progress for Inkscape for those who draw fonts. At the moment I re-draw Art Nouveau fonts ont top of very heavy scans of ancient text documents in Inkscape and this is very cool because one can align the characters and space them like in the original. This feature is lacking in drawing programs like Fontforge and even proprietary ones. Inkscape is perfect for that. ivan

Ctrl+click will do it. Ctrl+clicking both handles will make a linear segment.
- force the handles of a corner node to be mirrored along the x or y axis

A more generic thing to do would be provide point symmetry support directly in the node editor. With this, one could for example place a node exactly at the symmetry line and the resulting shape would be seamlessly stroked with correct miter joins. However, this would require very careful design to implement.

Another thing that is reportedly useful is deleting a node while preserving both the shape and the smoothness of adjacent nodes (essentially, fitting with one less degree of freedom than normally, modifying only the length of the adjacent handles if their nodes are smooth). I received this suggestion at last year's LGM.

There are a few plausible interaction models in 2geom/toys/conic*. They try to capture the nice properties of bezier handles: endpoints, tangent matching on the 2nd outer ones, convex hull. They meet all of these, but I didn't find them compelling enough to spend the effort integrating them back in the day. This might have changed. If you can work out any additional constraints we might be able to improve the feel.
