[Fwd: Re: SoC proposal: ImageMagick effects in Inkscape]
Bulia, which filter effects do you think we should focus on next?

I've had a look through the filter effects, and I agree it would be more worthwhile for me to work on implementing them. Do you have any recommendation as to how many new filter effects I should tackle? I don't really know enough about the system yet to estimate how long each is likely to take.

feBlend, but Niko is already working on it, and will probably work on the rest of them for the Finnish summer program that he applied to. So, while we would certainly welcome any help on this, I don't think we should make another "SVG filters" SOC project, at least not until Niko's proposal is approved or rejected.
OK. Any other suggestions as to what projects Inkscape does need that aren't being worked on by others?

Well, of those listed at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Googles_Summer_Of_Code_2007, the 3DBox, the live path effects, and the PDF import seem to be firmly taken. The text one looks like it may be taken too (by Gail). The new grids one is free, but you will need to talk to Johan Engelen on how much of it he's already done and how much remains. The rest are free, though they vary widely in their level of feasibility and desirability, as well as in mentor availability. You can choose whichever you like and discuss it here, or you can come up with something of your own.

Oh, by the way, there's also the project to create a UI for SVG effects that would allow freely stacking them. Niko is not working on UI, so this one is free, and it seems close enough to your original proposal.

What kind of summer program (summer school?) is it? Do you happen to have some more information about it?
TIA, Helge

It's equivalent to Google's Summer of Code, but only for Finnish students. I don't know yet, if I get accepted, though.
There's more info at http://www.coss.fi/web/coss/developers/summercode You can also take a look at my project proposal at http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/kiirala/kesakoodi/application.html
And about that feBlend - I should just find me a bit time for finishing it. It won't be of much use yet, because it can only blend the object with itself... This is the main reason, why I have "Support for in-parameter on document level" included in this project proposal. After it's finished, feBlend renderer will be able to use other inputs, too.
OK, I think I'll submit a proposal based on this:

Ronan, your idea about animation sounds very interesting, but unfortunately I don't think I have enough time before the deadline to write a good proposal for animation tools (my fault for waiting too long.)

After further consideration, I'm wondering whether just doing a UI is really enough for a full SoC project. Do you think it might be better to add a second goal for the project, e.g. a proposal for 'SVG improvements' that would include both the UI for filter effects and adding support for SVG fonts? (The SVG font idea is listed on the Inkscape wiki page, although there's no mentor listed.)

I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, but it seems to me that svg filter effects are very expressive and flexible. It could be quite a large task to build a ui that presents the full power to the users in an acceptably intuitive way.
