Hi,
I just deleted my preferences file and restarted the latest bzr version of Inkscape. I see that the command bar (file/print/etc.) and snap bar are both vertical and on the right side. I really don't like this and prefer them the way they were. Is there a way to move them back? There was recently an option at the end of the command bar to select the preferred placement but it seems to have disappeared.
I think that unless there is a compelling reason to set the default to have the bars on the right, the default should be as before. I can't think of any other software that has the file/print/etc. icons on the right. In addition, changes like this mean that a lot of documentation screen shots have to be updated so the changes should really be necessary.
Thanks,
Tav

Just noticed the exact same thing, after doing a fresh checkout of our repository. Is someone following up upon Tavmjong's report?

When Inkscape detects that you have a widescreen display, it puts the bars on the rhs. You can put them back where they 'belong' from the menu: View >> Default (at the bottom)

I forgot to say that I also do not like the widescreen behavior, and I think Inkscape should always start the first time with 'Default' (regardless of monitor size).

Inkscape detects wide-screen monitors and sets 'View > Wide' at the first launch (revision 9503 and later).
Changing back to previous toolbar layout: 'View > Default' Changing back to 0.47 toolbar layout: 'View > Custom' (string freeze prevented to adapt menu entry)

Yes...
many people like that, especially netbook users.
However I think I should tweak the "smart" parameter a bit. That's the one that determines if it should go to "wide" or not. Can you guys give me your screen ratios? width/height
I'm also thinking that when it is in wide mode, we should probably drop that toolbar onto the left, not the right... given that we also have the snap one and all.

My res is 1680x1050 (16:10), prefer that bar up top personally.
Cheers, Josh

I'm also at 1680x1050, and prefer the command bar up the top (or hidden - I absolutely never use it; can I hide it?). As for the snap bar, I've got used to that on the right now and prefer it there, I think, as it balances the tool bar on the left.
Thanks,

1440 x 900 (MBP), defaults to 'View > Wide'
Personally I changed back to 'View > Default' (command bar at the top), out of habit (?) and because I don't like working with maximized windows (for windows not maximized but with custom proportions (user default template), adapting to 'wide-screen' seems kind of odd to me).
@ChrisMorgan - 'View > Show/Hide > Commands Bar' doesn't work for you?

Quite interesting. So we have a general response from several people, all who happen to report a 1.6 ratio and don't feel they're quite "wide" yet.

For me, it's not a matter of "feeling wide"... it's a matter of having enough vertical space to not need/desire that bar on the side. However, having the snapping bar on the side feels better for me personally.
Cheers, Josh

I have a 1920 x 1200 laptop screen.
For me, any advantage of having the command bar on the side is immediately lost as soon as I have a docked dialog.
I also think that "Default" should mean default. This is important from a documentation point of view.
On a related note, now that the Text toolbar has been GtkAction-a-fied, I find that the new window size to be a bit small. (The width of the non-GtkAction-a-fied bar limited how narrow the window could be.)

The save button has moved from topleft all the way to the topright. I think people would like the 'wide' setting a lot more if the save button and the rest of the bar would stay on the lefthandside.
Another issue is the 'undiscoverability' of the ability to move the bars.
Ciao, Johan

Agreed... which is perhaps why making this feature dumb instead would be preferable. The minority of low-res users who seek the non-standard layouts would have it available, while not affecting the rest of the userbase. (agreed to the far left alignment when used though)
Cheers, Josh
I like the default behaviour, because there is much more space avaiable for the drawing. But, is not it possible to make the bars draggable again so that you can position them where you want them too (similar to 0.47 behaviour, but with automatic horizontal or vertical orientation)?
Regards K.
PS: I did not find the option to change the position either

The bars as just as draggable as they are in .47 and 0.46.
The toolbars are implemented with GTK+'s standard dragging, which only allows them to be floated out or returned to the exact same doc that they originated with. We want to allow for arbitrary drag to any location, but we have to create all of that code ourselves, since the toolkit does not provide it.
The other problem is that for certain desktops (Windows and KDE) the Gtk+ floating window behavior is broken, and we were asked to disable it.
Things work nicely here on OS X. :-)
