Hello there!
I am using Inkscape 0.39 (20040618).
Say I have drawn a rectangle. Then I want to resize this rectangle but only horizontally (e.g. make it shorter), but I want this process to be precise, so that object height is fixed while I drag the right bottom resize dot. Currently, this is not possible. If I Ctrl+drag, the rectangle resizes proportionally. If I convert it to curves, I can use the center resize handles to resize it, but I want my corner radii to be left as in original, so I don't want to convert it.
Proposal: when Shift+drag is used on the resize dot of the rectangle tool, make only horizontal (fixed y size) and only vertical (fixed x size) resizing possible, depending on where the user drags.
Good luck!
Artemio.

Maybe the trick with the extrahandle to have the radii stay the same while scaling should be moved into a keybinding for general scaling? This way, you can still use the right, left, top, bottom and corner handles, the way you are used to it from scaling rects without radii. What do you think, Bulia? Has anyone any proposals for a binding?

1. The corner radii are preserved by default, both when you drag the bottom right handle and when you transform the rect using selector.
2. With selector, this is controlled by a user preference (Preferences / Transforms). I'm going to put a toggle button for this preference right on the Tool {Options|Controls} {Panel|Bar}.
3. The fact that the display of the corners is wrong while you dragging but is restored when you release is a Known Problem. It's very difficult to fix it at this time. If it annoys you, go to Preferences/Tools/Selector and switch "When transforming show" to "Box outline".
Hope this makes things more clear.
