But, as this has already been taking so long, I also wouldn't mind if this just became a nice, concise, easy article, with a few small example pictures.
Yes — :). I saw this task and read the ‘bug’ report almost entirely, and found strange that not even a small and efficient result followed so much motivation. I didn't step in for the moment as I thought it was not the task I was the most suited for.
*Easy* is a key point, because the people who need this explanation usually don't know anything about vector graphics. It should also not be a long read (hence the info graphic idea), but something that you jump to, read, and return to what you've been previously doing (because we would like to point people to it, when they ask a question that shows that the difference isn't clear to them yet).
I'd like to have something that is a bit exhaustive, still targeted at the average person. I think we could have a first part ‘The main idea’ which allows the reader to quickly mentally represent bitmaps and vectors (opposing the grid of pixels to the wonderful world of geometry), then the details of real life: how computers deal with it, how they are used in the world's diversity, where they do appear in common uses of computers, etc. You may also consider the opposite pedagogy: the needs then the means, for a more absorbing article. Well… This would oblige readers to read the whole page to get the theory.
We've got a list somewhere of the concepts that would need to be explained. I (or Brynn) can forward it to you if you would like to get started with any of this. It's a result of years-long forum experience of answering noob questions ;-)
I'm not called Brynn, thus I wonder — is it the following? https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape-web/+bug/1258842/comments/25
