Hi everyone,
I've started the 'About SVG' page for the 'Develop' submenu at http://staging.inkscape.org/en/develop/about-svg. There aren't any links in it yet, because of the plugin links not being transferable from staging to live. Text formatting isn't finished yet, either.
The last section, where links to external pages will live, is your realm, Brynn :)
For the next-to-last section, I would appreciate Tav's and every other developer's help for prompting me with some keywords, and probably people will also have additional remarks for the 'Why...' section.
Improvement / wording / orthography suggestions welcome!
Regards, Maren

I did a little searching, but then I wanted to see the overview that you were going to write, to get some hints about some different search terms. (I'm not very knowledgeable about this.) So far, I've found a few tutorials (on writing SVG). Although I agree that we probably want to limit the "unofficial links", as much as possible. Martin replied to me privately (for some reason), saying he didn't think a new menu item is needed, and that he thinks the new page about SVG should go in Develop menu. It sounds like the page should have 2 sections: How Inkscape Uses SVG2 and Learn SVG.
- Sounds good to me, and it sounds like we'll definitely need some
input from Tav for the specifics...
OH!! I found it. I don't know why in the world a website set up to accompany a book, doesn't have a link to the book *anywhere* on the site!! But here it is: -- free PDF download: http://www.scribd.com/doc/58271695/Learn-SVG -- purchase:
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/5485/Learn-SVG-The-Web-Graphics-Standard
Those should probably go on Books and Manuals page?
- Congrats on finding it :) and thanks for not giving up digging!
Yes, I think that link could be added back in there, with one caveat: The text is from ~ 2003. The principles are probably still the same for the majority of the contents, the maths didn't change, and I believe backwards compatibility is something which is taken seriously by W3C, but many details and tipps and tricks mentioned in the text will be outdated, and some new functionality must have been built in in the meantime. There are some nice nostalgic screenshots of Netscape - and in contrast to the text, even IE now supports SVG... ;) So we'll need to add a hint about the age of the text, and about the areas where it is still valid, and where it is not. I can't really judge this, unfortunately. Another question for Tav, I'm afraid.

All best :-)

Hi Brynn,
finally, I'm back and have some time to write something up.
Ok :-)
I'm about to go offline for now. But I'll plan on doing some
searching, the
next time I'm back online, and I'll look for a new page with intro
text, if
you can get it started, Maren. And then Maren and I can collaborate from there. Maybe during my search I'll get some ideas about organizing the page. It may end up being just a handful of links, but....well, as we've said, at least it will be a start.
Do you already have a list of links which should be included in the SVG page and/or the SVG animation page? And has there been any progress on where those pages should end up? It's also possible to move a page after it has been created, so if we don't know where to put it yet, it's not so problematic (Although it would help to know the intended audience of a text before writing it...) Just don't put it in the menu before it is finished (the little red/green sign at the end of the row in the pages list should be red), and don't link to it before we know where it will live.
uh-oh.....could the site, the django part handle some simple animation of SVG?....maybe you guys
would
have to set up that part of the page, since I don't understand a lot of those django plugins?
- I think that should work just fine. It only depends on browser
support, but not on the website. A js-based animation made with sozi can be viewed by clicking the 'view' button: http://staging.inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/19/ . I copied Tav's SMIL/CSS animations from his page http://tavmjong.free.fr/SVG/ANIMATION/ to check, as I didn't have any: a SMIL animation can be viewed directly, even in the gallery view; a CSS based animation can be viewed with the view button.
