Hi,
Thanks to Sylvain, I saw on an french task list (1) that a clear explanation of the difference between a bitmap/raster file and a vector one was wanted for the website. I also read a part of the conversation on the bug report page (2) (not everything as the discussion is quite long :) ).
If it's still on the todo list, I just wanted to mention that the Mapschool page (3) has a short paragraph that explains the difference between both. As it's licenced under CC0, it could be partly recycled for the Inkscape website.
I'm available to help on this topic, but as I don't really know where to start, a quick heads-up would be appreciated!
Best,
Jeremy

- Yes, the main intention was to have an info graphic explaining the differences and to have a short text that accompanies the picture, if needed.
It seems to be a bit difficult, though, to find someone to draw such a graphic for us. Brynn had the idea to make this some sort of contest, or to just ask on social media for someone who could draw up such a thing.
Could you also imagine to help with something like that (I don't mean drawing yourself - unless you want to, but helping to organize this)?
But, as this has already been taking so long, I also wouldn't mind if this just became a nice, concise, easy article, with a few small example pictures.
*Easy* is a key point, because the people who need this explanation usually don't know anything about vector graphics. It should also not be a long read (hence the info graphic idea), but something that you jump to, read, and return to what you've been previously doing (because we would like to point people to it, when they ask a question that shows that the difference isn't clear to them yet).
We've got a list somewhere of the concepts that would need to be explained. I (or Brynn) can forward it to you if you would like to get started with any of this. It's a result of years-long forum experience of answering noob questions ;-)

- The raster part of it is quite strong, but a bit too complex for our needs. The vector part is very short, in comparison, and it's focused on map-making. We could take a few of the phrases as a starting point for our own article.

Yes — :). I saw this task and read the ‘bug’ report almost entirely, and found strange that not even a small and efficient result followed so much motivation. I didn't step in for the moment as I thought it was not the task I was the most suited for.

I'd like to have something that is a bit exhaustive, still targeted at the average person. I think we could have a first part ‘The main idea’ which allows the reader to quickly mentally represent bitmaps and vectors (opposing the grid of pixels to the wonderful world of geometry), then the details of real life: how computers deal with it, how they are used in the world's diversity, where they do appear in common uses of computers, etc. You may also consider the opposite pedagogy: the needs then the means, for a more absorbing article. Well… This would oblige readers to read the whole page to get the theory.

I'm not called Brynn, thus I wonder — is it the following? https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape-web/+bug/1258842/comments/25

Yay! Before Django, I had only known WordPress. -- Sylvain
Honestly, I've become so frustrated not to have a place to refer people for this! As soon as we get the forum issues all settled, I've been thinking to get this project started in a couple of potential different ways.
1 -- I would draw such an info graphic myself, and then offer it up to the community to tweak and edit as needed. Probably wouldn't look anything like my original, by the time it's finished (and that would be a good thing -- I'm no artist) but I hope it would kick-start the project.
Sometimes I think it's easier for people to just fix a piece here and there, rather that to start out staring at a blank canvas!
2 - Or I would write up the text part of it. We could tweak the text until it's just right. And then offer it up to the community, to create the graphics.
I'd like to make it a contest. However recent experience tells me that perhaps it will be hard to present the guidelines in a meaningful way. But maybe if the text was already there, and the artwork was a group project.....??
Anyway, unless someone comes up with something before I have time, I think I'll probably try #2. But it will be some weeks away, before I can start.
OH!! Idea :-) Once we get the forum issues settled, maybe this could be the first official competition for the new official forum?
All best, brynn

@Sylvain: The purpose of the page is not of encyclopedic nature. People could use Wikipedia for that or just google it.
We are specifically looking for something that will help us in our day-to-day support-giving work.
The requirements for that are: easy, quick read / quick view, nice-looking, engaging, fitting to the Inkscape project (maybe with Inkscape mascot, not comparing to other specific software, stress on things people will wonder about when using Inkscape for the first time), translatable.

Comment #25 in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape-web/+bug/1258842
contains a list of the main points that we think the image should illustrate. That's about all we have that's concrete.
I was just trying out some ideas earlier today -- I've thought about writing sort of a sample script, to make it easier for artists to build on. But I didn't have much time, and didn't get very far.
However, I have no doubt that eventually we'll be successful, and have a nice graphic (or "infographic") for the website.
All best, brynn

By tempate, I meant an html template and style sheet. I have looking at the various ''Learn' pages, none of which contain images, save for a few in-line images in the FAQ page.
Yesterday, I tried to attach a grab of a graphic that I had made, but it got snared by the moderator bot as it was too big, and it seems to have got stuck pending a decision. I thought it might serve as a starting point, or something. Also, I made a start on a draft accompanying text, which I would be glad to post somewhere, so that others may comment and/or contribute.

Also, I made a start on a draft accompanying text, which I would be glad to post somewhere, so that others may comment and/or contribute.

contains a list of the main points that we think the image should illustrate.

Kind Regards, Maren

Well the page won't need a style sheet. Once the page is added to the website, it will use the style sheet of the website.
Thanks for your proposal! See my comments in the bug report.

Hi Jeremy,
thanks for your offer to help :)
Am 05.07.2016 um 12:34 schrieb Jeremy G:
Hi,
Thanks to Sylvain, I saw on an french task list (1) that a clear explanation of the difference between a bitmap/raster file and a vector one was wanted for the website. I also read a part of the conversation on the bug report page (2) (not everything as the discussion is quite long :) ).
- Yes, the main intention was to have an info graphic explaining the
differences and to have a short text that accompanies the picture, if needed.
If it's still on the todo list,
- Yes, we still don't have that kind of thing on our website.
I just wanted to mention that the Mapschool page (3) has a short paragraph that explains the difference between both. As it's licenced under CC0, it could be partly recycled for the Inkscape website.
- The raster part of it is quite strong, but a bit too complex for our
needs. The vector part is very short, in comparison, and it's focused on map-making. We could take a few of the phrases as a starting point for our own article.
I'm available to help on this topic, but as I don't really know where to start, a quick heads-up would be appreciated!
- We'd be glad to have some help here. Don't worry if it takes us a bit
to respond sometimes, we're all very busy at the moment with a lot of things - but we won't leave you hanging.
(Did you ever work with a website cms?)
Regards, Maren
Best,
Jeremy
