I am a long term tranditional Chinese FLOSS translator contributing to the Fedora project, Ubuntu, LibreOffice, Blender, etc.
I would like to contribute to Chinese (Traditional) language of the website. I just pressed the "Request" button. My account name is zerngjia.

As a first step, could you have a look at the trad. Chinese .po file here: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web-i18n
and (if you haven't done so yet) take a look at the CMS editing instructions here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WebSite and let us know if you have any questions about them?
Access to the website's CMS will be granted after you have made a contribution (the general rule for Inkscape is 2 contributions).
If ever in doubt about something, or if something unexpected happens (happened to all of us), let us know via mailing list or private email immediately.

Usually, traditional Chinese is set to zh_TW locale in many free software. However, I found the site set zh to simplified Chinese (usually set to zh_CN in programs), and set zh-Hant to traditional Chinese.

I think the issue is with django, as far as I understand...
So if you're translating for what the website calls zh-hant, then it /should/ be the same language shorthand within the po file, for consistency reasons (if it doesn't work, we can always fix it, though).
What would be the drawbacks of doing it this way? From what I read, I understand that it wouldn't be outright wrong, or would it be?

Well, I'm not a developer and not familiar with the django things. I know nothing about this. :P Maybe we should give a try.

Can you try if it complains with "zh_Hant" ?
It looks to me as if poedit supports it (but might be case sensitive, who knows - I don't have it installed), and even deprecated the zh_TW tag in 2016, as far as I understand [1] (unless it's the other way around, but then the code is misleading).
At least, django deprecated it [2], so we need to use zh_Hant or zh-hant. I will try it out locally, and fix if necessary.
