Okay, I've committed the updated Calligraphy & Advanced tutorials in the docbook module and they should be ready for translation updates. If there are any questions on language or terminology (or if you find mistakes/errors), please let me know.
I do plan on re-generating the tracing tutorial as soon as I can figure out the problem. Ishmal, if possible could you give me a quick rundown on how SIOX works in Inkscape so I could add that to the tutorial prior to committing?
Other than wanting to add SIOX to the tracing tutorial, the only other major change wrt tutorials will be the addition of a new tutorial that covers clipping, masking, and patterns.

Hi all,
Bryce, replying to a new potential volunteer on the devel ML (and forwarding him on this list) has given some very appreciated information : a sum up of the contacts for the documentation tasks :
-Translations: Arpad and this ML
-Tutorials : Scislac or Bulia
-Planet inkscape Jon Philips
-Screenshots Scislac
-Gallery Bryce
On the other hand a user has pointed out that some translations have not been maintained for a while (in fact since Inkscape has forked from Sodipodi)
This raises two flags in my opinion : - this WE, I'll get a look at the .po files and see what's the translation status for them. - maybe we should give some more explicit information about translators : such as displaying a page in the wiki with information about 'who is translating what' and 'how to contact them'
Example : Translation coordinator: Arpad -> contact Translator ML: this list
Spanish: es.po, Lucas -> contact Spanish (Mexican): es_MX.po, Daniel -> contact
(etc)
Regards,
matiphas
Hi all,
is it possible to post a translations status per language in % english 100% suaheli 5%
or so.
This would allow the possible volunteers to see how worth is it to help or on the other side maybe to kick (or hide) one very outdated translation.

I think so : Bryce used to post this kind of info for the global status of translations. I'll try to do the following : - Number of strings to translate - Date of last update - % of untranslated strings - % of fuzzy strings

Btw, there is a script in the inkscape_project module that calculates those parameters.

Hi,
I've faced an issue with translation of Inkscape and would like to know if some others have the same problem :
In my case, the license name strings of the "License" tab in "Document Metadata" are displayed in English whereas they correctly translated in the .po files. (Inkscape 0.43+ - svn from May 14th, on windows XP) Does someone else has the same problem ?

This is what I see in the source code:
document-metadata.cpp: _notebook.append_page(_page_metadata2, _("License")); document-metadata.cpp: llabel->set_markup (_("<b>License</b>"));
By chance are you noticing one instance of 'License' in the dialog translated, and another not? In this case perhaps only one of the above versions is appearing in the .po files?

Well, I noticed this problem with the license names such as ( FreeArt, GNU GPL, public domain, CC...) Looks like the issue is in /src/dialogs/rdf.cpp Taking a look at the svn from the web, it looks like the strings are marked as 'translatable' in the "struct"s (beginning of the file) but not in the codelines dedicated to display them.
I'll try to set up a build environment on my linux machine this WE and see what I can do.

"License" (string labelling the tab) is correctly displayed (the translated string is displayed in the tab label).

Actually, if I understand the issue correctly, the relevant code is a bit higher up:
188: for (entity = rdf_work_entities; entity && entity->name; entity++, row++) { 189: if ( entity->editable == RDF_EDIT_GENERIC ) { 190: EntityEntry *w = EntityEntry::create (entity, _tt, _wr); 191: _rdflist.push_back (w); 192: Gtk::HBox *space = manage (new Gtk::HBox); 193: space->set_size_request (SPACE_SIZE_X, SPACE_SIZE_Y); 194: _page_metadata1.table().attach (*space, 0,1, row, row+1, Gtk::FILL, (Gtk::AttachOptions)0,0,0); 195: _page_metadata1.table().attach (w->_label, 1,2, row, row+1, Gtk::FILL, (Gtk::AttachOptions)0,0,0); 196: _page_metadata1.table().attach (*w->_packable, 2,3, row, row+1, Gtk::FILL|Gtk::EXPAND, (Gtk::AttachOptions)0,0,0); 197: } 198: }
Try replacing line 195 with this one:
195: _page_metadata1.table().attach (_(w->_label), 1,2, row, row+1, Gtk::FILL, (Gtk::AttachOptions)0,0,0);

Looks like rwst tried to make them translatable (but didn't recognize that they're part of an array -- which needs N_ instead of _, and needs code refs, as you say.

I didn't originally make them translatable, since they're names. Does the name "Inkscape" get translated? However, the licenses are somewhat descriptive ("public domain") so I guess it makes sense. :)
I'll see if I can cook up a patch.

Cool. last night I committed a patch to correctly allow for localization of the license name. Seems to be working AFAICT.
Thanks for catching that!

Total number of PO files: 38 Significantly translated PO file count: 7 Average number of strings translated: 1973 ( 93 %) Significantly translated locales: ca cs de es fr lt sl
In fact, in my opinion, we've got 4 main categories :
1 maintained and up to date (>= 80%) : 8 ca cs de es fr it lt sl
2 maintained and simply needing a synchronization (>= 60%) : 10 eu hu ja nl nn pl pt_BR ru uk zh_TW
3 used to be maintained and needing some work (>=40%) : 4 el pa sk sr
4 not maintained at all (the others) : 11+3 am az be da et ga gl ko mk nb sv es_MX, but es is a potential good back-up pt, but pt_BR is a potential good back-up zh_CN, but zh_TW is a potential good back-up (not sure of this in fact)
-> in fact i'd rather say, we can count on 18 translations + 10 others if we can find some motivated people. (hey, that's quite a lot)
-> the 11+3 others are completely different IMO and need *very* motivated volunteers, the workload being quite big -> and of course, those that are not listed...
Maybe should we ask for motivated volunteers ? - mail on the other MLs (devel + user) - message on the web page - mail to translation organizations (GNOME, KDE, Rosetta ... ?)

Hi,
just wanted to know if there was any decision or action taken on this issue.
If you agree, i can ask for help on fedora translation list, on which i'm subscribed. Also, i can do some research for GNOME translation teams.
Regards.

Cool, good idea. To save space I just listed the %translated for each language. If anyone feels like improving the layout, please do; I fussed with some CSS and tables to get things to lineup nicer but it was beyond my css-fu.
Wow, looks like it'd be a great goal to get the languages that are at 70-72% up to at least 80% so they count as significantly translated.

Wow, very nice message. Thanks a lot Bryce.
This week i'll try to update l10_status scipt, so that it directly provides pre-formated (html ? xml ? wiki_code ?) output, that can be directly copied-pasted on a page.

That'd be excellent! Then we can always easily include this information when preparing for release.
Thanks, Bryce

I've updated the css file to beautify the list of translations on the news page. Also the structure of translations' list in article created by Bryce has been modified. I've removed the table and set lists to float so they will wrap if the page has width smaller then required.
Matiphas, the template for l10_status script now looks as the code below.(I hope it will make it through, otherwise plese consult the source code of the article for details, thanks.)
One idea at the end, is there any page where this status can users see without putting it on a homepage in news? it would be good to link it from the "TranslatingInkscape" page for user to let them see how is the progress there. The page could be static, generated by the script after each commit of updated translations. If such a page is already there then I suggest to link it :)

It floats okay in konqueror, but not in firefox...
Also, is there any way you can get the columns to line up a bit better? I.e., the first letter in each column should be aligned, and the percent sign on each number should be aligned within the column. I think this will make the list look cleaner.

Can you send me a screenshot of it in FF please? (+its version). The CSS has been tested in FF 1.5, Opera 8.0 and MSIE 6.0 and everywhere looked the same.
As you wish, aligned to the left, I will submit it from the office. And maybe redo it to the table to have much nicer columns.

One question,
why isn't inkscape.pot on the trunk? If the user has to create the template him/herself, one has to checkout the SVN trunk and run "make update-po", which can be a hell of work for people not familiar with it. In fact, I think from my experience some translators aren't hackers, so they feel comfortable translating, but checking a module can seem too complicated to start with. Even when a translation exist, sometimes you need the .pot too to merge changes.

Seconded. Imo, the best thing to do is filling an RFE about this, so that this can be improved just after 0.44

Hi,
why isn't inkscape.pot on the trunk?
There used to be a POT file, but was removed not so long ago. As Ralf wrote to me: "it is no longer necessary to commit inkscape.pot, in fact, it confuses people, and the file will be created automatically by packagers now." So please ask Ralf if you still want that file.

Plus even if it is not complete yet, it looks like the TestPage on wiki has received a lot of updates/improvements. Would you agree to see it replacing the present Translation page just after 0.44 ?

Great, thanks! I'll add this to the homepage.
By the way, for anyone that is having svn commit issues: SourceForge just recently changed how the svn permissions work, which is why many people cannot commit. Please ask Jon Cruz to set your access if you need it.

One idea at the end, is there any page where this status can users see without putting it on a homepage in news? it would be good to link it from the "TranslatingInkscape" page for user to let them see how is the progress there. I've just splitted the (now big) TestPage and created a TranslationStatus page
Thinking about continue splitting a little bit : keep 2 fisrt chapters (introduction/translatable content) create a specific page for
- interface and templates
- xml/docbook content
- other docs
- web/wiki content
Began split in the following pages : - TestPage (that will replace Translation Information later) contains : Chapters 1 & 2 (intro and translatable content) and a link to status page
- InterfaceTranslation contains detailed info about po files, windows installer and templates
- DocumentationTranslation contains detailed info about tutorials, keys, user manual, man pages
- WebSiteTranslation contains detailed info about web pages, news, wiki and release notes
- TranslationStatus
Now updating/correcting the links.
Regards,
Don't you think we should ask for translators? I think it would be useful to call for help through the news front page. For instance, GNOME project offcially supports those languages with more than 80 %, and I think there are only 8 languages with more than 80 % on Inkscape. This should be improved!
Also, it would be useful to have this kind of reports online, as GNOME, so people can access this information quickly:
http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.14/index.html
We should also improve the translationinformation wiki page, with useful info for people who know nothing about translating. It should cover a full process flow:
· contact to a local translation group, to get support and help on your language · subscribe to this list, · get files from svn or web interface · how to translate PO/tutorials/etc. · submit finished work to patch tracker
I think this work should be done by people without a technical background, plain users may afford to have a translation done.
More ideas on how to improve the translation statistics?
Regards!

It should reach 100% next weekend :)
Total number of PO files: 38 Significantly translated PO file count: 7 Average number of strings translated: 1973 ( 93 %) Significantly translated locales: ca cs de es fr lt sl
Counting also Italian, significantly translated PO file count just gets to 8....

The only trouble is that the GNOME project only translates software that's part of it. One of the requisites is that the software be on their servers in order to be abel to update the stats and all that. Anyway I am a member of the spanish GNOME team and I'm in charge of the translation of Inkscape to spanish, so maybe we could attract translators that are already doing stuff for GNOME and help us out too.

Hey, sorry, don't misunderstood me: GNOME is just an example, I'm not suggesting there should be more interaction with us. By the way, I participate on translating GNOME to Catalan too. ;).
Hope this clarifies my point of view.
GNOME's translation project is got a list of translation teams that are working on the project; we could use this list to call for help.

It'd be awesome to see this hit 10. :-)
