Vietnamese translation

I'm here in response to the matiphas' email to the Deb18n list. I'm willing to translate Inkscape into Vietnamese.
I've had a look at your wiki page (information for translators), which is very helpful. I have a couple of questions. ;)
1. What is your timeline? I'd hope to get the interface file translated for release.
2. At the bottom of the status page, you note that:
GNOME has the following at >50%. bg, ca, cs, de, en_CA, en_GB, es, fi, fr, nb, ne, nl, pl, pt, pt_BR, ru, sk, sr, sv, uk, vi, zh_CN, and zh_TW
I also translate for GNOME, and I can't find Inkscape on the GNOME l10n status pages [1]. If it had been there, I would have translated it long ago, and kept it updated for releases.
Where does Inkscape fit in with GNOME? Would I do better to get the interface PO file from GNOME (and if so, how, please?), or directly from SVN?

The 0.44 release is scheduled to be released within a matter of a few days, or less. It may be a bit late for 0.44.0, but you are definitely in time for 0.44.1. The 0.45 development cycle will last about a couple months, and we plan to put out a few 0.44.x point releases during that cycle.
Arpad is the contact point for translation work on the stable 0.44 branch; for the 0.45 branch, any of the developers can commit changes.

Inkscape is actually not a GNOME project, although we do follow many of the same procedures and do use Gtk. We've looked into becoming a GNOME project a few times before, and it's certainly possible we could become one in the future, but currently we are an independent project. Thus, you should get the PO/POT file through our SVN, and follow the procedures outlined by Inkscape's translation team.

My pleasure. My team-leader at GNOME identified Inkscape as a key application some time ago, so I'm really glad to be getting on with it. :)

Actually there is an entry for sodipoli under extras/ but the name reflects that it is pretty outdated.

I had no idea what it was, so I only got around to translating it recently. I have it at 100% for GNOME, so that should help
However, if that POT is out-of-date, it would help to have it removed from GNOME CVS/SVN, so we don't waste time translating it.
However, when I looked for the language I work on ('el' - Greek) I found out that someone has made some progress in the meantime which wasn't commited to our repository!
Looks like something is broken there. :(
When I translated some strings in Greek, the only one who had worked on that previously was Simos Xenitelis back in 2001.
Simos is an excellent translator, a great resource for GNOME i18n.
However on Gnome pages, Kostas Papadimas has done some more work in 2003 and 2004 and translated some strings in Greek. But his work doesn't appear in our repository!
Are you not integrating the work from GNOME, perhaps?
If this is the case with other languages, maybe we can merge the Gnome sodipoli PO files with the current strings. Languages with small percentages might get a significant boost. (In Greek, translation work done in 2001 saved me from re-translating something like 150 strings, and provided helpful clues on translating some terminology.)

I'll initialize the Inkscape PO file from my compendium, which has all the sodipodi strings: that should give me a good start.

There have been discussions of keeping Inkscape's PO files on GNOME but we still haven't reached a decision.
Undoubtedly, you would get more translator attention. The GNOME Translation Project has a large and growing number of translation teams whose translators work very hard. It's also easier for us to keep track of modules which are part of a larger translation project: chasing up individual projects is more time-consuming. For example, I check my TP, GNOME, KDE and Debian status pages every few days, but only have time to respond to individual projects when I get an update mail, or get reminders on their mailing list. The big projects do tend to get priority, because they use our effort more efficiently.
Currently the safest way to go is to get them from Inkscape's SVN repository. A 0.44 branch has not yet been created, so simply checkout https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/po/ and work on that.

This is actually the case. I don't know who uploaded the sodipoli POT file, but many teams have done some progress in translating it. Few translations I checked:
These teams have done newer work which is not in Inkscape's repository: el, nb, pt, az
These teams have translated the Sodipoli POT files, but there are no translations in inkscape repository: vi, ne, fi, et
And I didn't check every project, so this is not the full list.
I believe we must set a policy for cooperation with the Gnome translation teams and remove the sodipoli POT files ASAP (translation work on sodipoli strings doesn't benefit anyone).

The release wardens know for sure, they are Jon Cruz and Aaron Spike. But release time is "any day" now, since we've been in string freeze for 3 weeks now... Someone with more info should fill you in on the exact timeline.

By the way, is Sodipodi unmantained? Sodipodi translators should be warned that they should contribute translations to Inkscape.
