I'm in the progress of updating the Windows installer for 0.92 release and asked myself which languages should be included in the final package? Are there some guidelines or do we simply include all of them, even if they're mostly outdated? How was this handled in the past?

Since languages seem to be hardcoded in "src/inkscape-preferences.cpp" we probably can not just drop those languages during packaging. Otherwise the language would still be offered as a choice, even if it's not present (which is is also an issue if the user decides not to install translations during installation).

FYI current language statistics are attached (I hope it get's through), otherwise a copy is available from [1].

Hi,

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I cannot find the way to update POT-file after CMake conversion for build system. Ukrainian is shown as 100 % translated in the attached statistics but it is not so at least for the bzr trunk.

Example: src/ui/widget/page-sizer.cpp:409: _fitPageButton.set_label(_("_Resize page to drawing or selection (Ctrl+Shift+R)"));

but my PO contains "_Resize page to drawing or selection" so in interface it is effectively untranslated.

So the question is, are the messages from Inkscape POT synced with the current code? Can we update the catalog locally in some way?

Hi there,

I lost enthusiasm. I got the pt_BR translation file already in 50% and could raise it to 62% but it cost me 2 or 3 full days. In this journey, being alone, is more or less a burden.. I wish I could team up with Duarte who is a disciplined and diligent translator... but for pt_PT and not pt_BR. hehe.

It's tough. I believe that, without help from more pt_BR translators, I will not be able to finish this file on time. :-(

I wish I knew pt_PT to team up with Duarte.

I am currently working on the European Portuguese pt_PT translation for Inkscape, but given the outdated and messy state of the current translation I decided to start from scratch. I started very recently and make slow progress as time allows. I'm currently under 2% completion, it will never be complete in time for 0.92 release, not even on par with the existing progress so for pt_PT.

For that reason I'd say either go with the current one as previous releases or totally exclude it from 0.92. There always pt_BR as fallback which seems to be in a better state. As general rule, I'd say incomplete/outdated translation is better than no translation at all, so I'd include anything that has any modest progress and it may even encourage some contributions. What do you Think?

One other offtopic nitpicking: Statistics came through just fine, but why are languages with 0% progress shown with a full green progress bar? Is this a glitch? Those bars seem to be drawn by the system, in this case Windows 7 for me, so maybe people in Linux/Mac will see it differently. It's the same on the website so it's not just an attachment thing.

Should be your mail reader or browser, but I guess you didn’t read the column headers well… I don’t see any languages with 0% progress. I only see « am » with 8086 untranslated strings, all other ones have more translations — :).

I went ahead and updated the NSIS installer accordingly, so it can install all available Inkscape translations now.

@translators: It would probably be a good time to have a quick look at the installer translations (they're separate from the .po files) if you have some time to spare, see http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/0.92.x/files/head:/packag... for the currently available translations.

@Victor I think you hold me in higher regard than I deserve. Its just that I do enjoy working alone, so slowly translating a bit every evening is, not a burden for me at all, though some times I do prefer to be gaming or 3D modeling instead so translation lag behind. ;-)

Anyway that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to team up, cooperation would certainly help, though as you said, Inkscape would probably benefit from the two distinct Portuguese variants, and I fear I would also not be fluent enough to translate into pt_BR.

Have you tried any Inkscape Brazilian communities? Maybe you can recruit some help there, I'm sure it will be a lot easier than finding or recruiting any pt_PT help.

- I can only speak for the website - for that, in principle, it's possible to define a fallback language per language there. When Duarte, Roberto, and you, Victor (hope I didn't forget anyone?), have some time, you can decide together if you would like that (there's no urgency, just answering because my name popped up ;-)).

Alright, something very weird happened here, not really sure how or where I got my original Inkscape PO file but the current version I see now is in a pretty good state actually, more in line with what was reported in the translation statistics, which was really bugging me as 100% completion.

The one I downloaded before was pretty incomplete and with wrong translations everywhere, not sure where I got that from but it was obviously the wrong file. Anyway never mind my 2% I've been basically working for nothing, that one seems quite ready for release actually. I might look deeper into its state at a later time but from my early peek, everything seems quite in order, onl minor changes expected. Sorry for the false alarm.

I've made a few small updates for the Portuguese nsh file. What should I do with it, file a bug report? I've attached it to this email, but they are often removed so not sure it will get to you.

Volunteer contribution is never miserable — :). Actually we could feel miserable for not having seduced you enough so that you’d finish the work.

Sure, that would be possible, but I don’t agree much… I think we’d better provide your incomplete-but-well-aimed translation, then users could make their own opinion about the European Portuguese translation being more convenient for them or not.

And then they could imagine help making the Brazilian version as pretty as the European one.

Note that Duarte hasn’t finished his translation either. Didn’t he talk about some 2%? -- Sylvain
