Neither will transparent boxes.
Transparent boxes cannot be seen by the user. Transparent boxes cannot be selected with a click to the area. There is small but significant effort required to make boxes perfectly aligned and abutted. I do not have a clear picture of a better solution in my head. And I cannot deny that any solution will require a large effort. But I think something so simple, central to graphics work and so often requested may in fact require some special attention. IMHO boxes are a (very useful) work around, but not a solution. Let's discuss how to create the ultimate solution for this problem, listing needs, possibilities, pros and cons on the wiki and perhaps with a clear plan it will interest a new developer sometime in the future.
