But if the object were guides you could see them on the screen with some color/format of choice and they won't appear on exported or printed works. You could also select them all at once, snap only to them and treat them more like what they really are, not part of the drawing itself but a guide. I know you could do most of this with layers and outline mode right now but it could help new users to achieve what they want easier. If this is more than a simple change to the code I think it could benefit some, however if it needs a lot of work to make it happen I'm not so sure it's worth it.

This is already perfectly possible. Select any object, make it transparent and export selection. What are you proposing to change?
