Yes, I am interested in alternatives to achieve this effect in Inkscape too. Dragging the nodes is not difficult but the ease of use it somewhat dependent on the font used. For instance, a script font would be much harder to do as opposed to a block font.
If anyone has tried the the mould tool in the free Xara LX (Linux only) then I think that is what D. Jones is after. That particular tool is extremely powerful.
