I don't think it's a good idea. Treating some objects in a special way should always be avoided unless absolutely necessary. So far nobody has convinced me that just a bunch of transparent rects in their own layer is not sufficient. When in that layer, you can Ctrl+A to view the overall configuration of slices (each one showing as a dotted selection box), then tab through them to select the one you need.
