I think that's probably the main thing for people in these lists. Try to be consistent, avoid getting pedantic, and most of all try to keep communication effective.
Yes, while we do strive to use standards and conventions, we don't want to get carried away and bent out of shape over dotting every i and crossing every t. ;-)
Due to my job, I've got a lot of exposure to corporate types (aka 'top posters'), so find myself switching back and forth quite often. My general rule is to just follow whatever style the previous poster in the thread did, and leave it at that.
Anyway, I'll underline Jon's point about not getting too pedantic about things; as long as the communication is working, that's all we need. :-)
