I would suggest using ODT. It may not seem initially any better or more convenient, and although not immune to bugs, at least you can be sure it will never contain any tracking code or third party advertising - both of which which are often vulnerable to injecting exploits on your machine.
ODT is awful. LibreOffice is pretty bad. Why not plain text, or if that doesn't work for us, HTML?
