Objects appear to have a default opacity (0.75 from the XML editor?) but the item properties dialog box says opacity = 1.
It's two different opacities. 0.75 is the fill opacity, it's set in the Fill & Stroke dialog, Fill tab, it only affects fill. The Object Properties lets you set an overall opacity of the entire object (both fill and stroke). The two opacity settings are independent.
