Is this worth all the trouble of adding a new object type and making changes in a lot of places to treat it differently?

You can do this with transparent boxes in their own layer, just ctrl+a.

You can snap to regular objects now.
If this is more than a simple change to the code I think it could benefit some, however if it needs a lot of work to make it happen I'm not so sure it's worth it.
I'm afraid it's indeed a lot of work.
