Just curious, how many pre tarballs are expected? ie. How long before .44 stable?
Looking at the tags in SVN, in the past we've always had exactly four (pre0 - pre3). However, that's coincidence rather than a rule. It's up to the release wardens to determine when things are smooth enough to stop doing pre-releases and release the final version.
