Very cool to see all this interest in the tutorials and docbook. :-)
Here's the lowdown on DocBook tools and stuff. As bulia mentioned, it's an XML format sort of like HTML for making reports, software manuals, and the like. It can be converted into HTML, PDF, PS, and other XML formats like SVG via 'stylesheets'.
A bunch of converter tools are available online; here's a listing:

DocBook is also the standard format that GNOME and KDE use for their system documentation. See 'Scrollkeeper' if you're curious.
There are some GUI tools for editing DocBook, such as ThotBook or LyX, but they tend to be a bit incomplete feature-wise so YMMV. OpenOffice also has a WYSIWYG DocBook editor. You can also look into general purpose XML editors such as XXE, XMetal, etc. as they'll be able to handle DocBook as well. As others mentioned, often just editing in a text editor is often quite sufficient.
There's a ton of DocBook info on the web. Here's one site that seems to have a well organized collection of links: http://wiki.docbook.org/topic

Just what does one do to view a docbook module? I just looked at your basic tutorial. It is marvelous. I wish I had had it when I was starting out with Inkscape. I would like to see the whole tutorial in docbook, which looks to be interactive.
Docbook doesn't look to be an app, but a DTD. What does one do to make it intellible? Use a browser? If so, how? (I'm using Firefox on WinXP.) Is there a reader app?
Please forgive these very basic questions.

check out the doc-docbook module from our CVS
And if you can't do that, here's a zip file of the same:
