thanks for your tip, but I wasn't able to find the menu item you wrote about:
(Object->Object to marker)
I'm using Inkscape 0.45.1/Linux.

A workaround I have found is to turn your object (the circle) into a marker (Object->Object to marker) , and use the Effects->Modify Paths->Add Nodes extension to create nodes with an even spacing and change the start, mid and end markers to the newly defined marker shape (see attached)
