I tend to agree with Alexandre (but I am no developer so my opinion has little weight). The Inkscape logo is nice and it can look very good with some polish (see http://openclipart.org/clipart//computer/icons/inkscape.svg), which decrease the need for a mascot. Linux has no logo other than "Linux" word (with the "i" in italic and red), so it needed something (Tux). Similarly, the logo for GIMP had only "theGIMP", so Wilber was needed. I don't think Mozilla really has a logo: the green lizard was the Netscape's logo, the red lizard was not much used because of the green lizard (trademarks) and because of it's communist look, the Fox is only for Firefox etc.
You have no idea how much communistic Mozilla can look :)
