Depending upon your requirements, you might be able to satisfy them by just generating SVG documents directly - if this sounds like what you want, maybe start with some SVG tutorials?
I assume you are familiar with some scripting language :) If not then maybe you want to get into some Python etc.

The documentation talks about converting formats and flipping an existing image. That is fine, but i want to do far more. Like create numerous objects, change their colours and then finally save it.
