I'm using Inkscape for diagrams of computer networks, i.e. the sort of thing that Visio is good for.
Is there a gallery or library of "shapes" or "components" anywhere? (Hoped to find something on www.openclipart.org but that site is still down.)
go here: http://openclipart.org/downloads/
download the entire library to your computer. i recommend the ones with the png's as well. then you won't have to worry about the site going down. ;)
In addition, google images + trace in Inkscape is a good way to get vector representation of various hardware parts (especially with "remove background" checked or foreground extraction). If you are after more geometric shapes there is no palettes of such elements but it seems to come quite often as a request. You could fill a proper Feature Request on Sourceforge and if you draw a set of those shapes I bet it won't be too difficult to add some collections of those shapes to Inkscape codebase (just as arrow ends, patterns etc.)
