Sounds like you've got the fill/stroke either set to none or to whatever your background is. Use fill/stroke (ctrl+F) to check/change.

Hi,
I'm very new to inkscape and am just learning my way through.
I've just noticed that I'm in an odd draw mode for rectangles and circles where, when I draw them, instead of rectangles or circles showing up, I get an outline box and two small squares and a circle actually on the outline box (not IN it). My goal is just to draw a rectangle or a circle.
Can you help me with this?
Thanks for your time!
C.
