Yes, you can do that using Effects->Generate from Path->Pattern along path

If that object was life, i.e. changing the original triangle would change the path, that'd be even more useful.
Another nice feature would be the ability to set the width of a path wither anywhere or at least at any knot -- w/o converting the path into outlines.
