Just did that. Still when I create the clones (they all get created even though they're not visible) and they don't show up with any fill on screen. Yet when I window them to select one, it shows that it has the color of the image in that area for both the fill and stroke and full opacity, yet it's invisible on screen.
Have you tried it on your end to see if I'm imagining things? :)
