Well, one of the issues is that the importer doesn't 'show' you anything. Actually the gradient gets imported, but there isn't an object with that gradient on it. If you go to the fill & stroke dialog, you can add it to a shape by clicking on the gradient for the fill or stroke of any object on your canvas.
Bulia and I have been talking about ways to make this more obvious -- hopefully it will be more user friendly in the next Inkscape release.
