It must be partly bbecause of discussions like these that Inskape has become such a great program!
I'd love to comment a bit on it as well. (1) Completely disregarding programming effort and such, I would _advocate_ a dedicated slice-functionality with such a name, because that's what a user will be looking for. "huh! I need slices from this drawing in my website... Hey! A slice command!" (2) Would it for a start not be a straightfprward work-around/UI-test to just write a Python filter iterating through a series of objects with "slice_" in their id (the user can enter these id's himself, can't she?) and exporting all these objects to PNG automatically? It would require NO adjustments in the existing infrastructure at all... If I could write Pyhton, I would have made it now... It's only putting existing functionality automatically to use... Bill Gates might almost have called it a "macro"...
PSEUDOCODE:
for (all objects in the file) { if ("slice" is a part of the object-id){ remember old fill- and gradient-settings make object transparent export the object give the objects its old fill and gradient back } }
Well, I know it might sound a bit naieve, but I guess you get the picture anyhow...
