Usually the errors you are seeing are caused by the autodetect feature failing to find a match of what format to open/save your file as. Usually a good thing to try when getting these errors is to force Inkscape to use a format by selecting it in the open/save dialog.
I'll also mention that this has gotten alot better in the upcoming release. Bulia and I have been spending time making this work better, and also give better error messages when it fails.
