[Inkscape-user] Default line width

Is there any way to set a default line width? Inkscape seems to always wants to use zero width, which isn't very useful, especially for line and bezier drawing! It also doesn't seem to remember the width from one line to the next. Is this intended, or a bug?

Using v 0.43 on Mdk 10.1
