Yeah - don't do other things while you render :)
It's probably because your cpu usage is going to be very high while rendering your images. It will eat an entire cpu's processes until it's finished, and the more complex the image, the longer it will take.
Not much you can do about that, really, unless you want to play with nicing your processes (on certain platforms only, afaik).
