Can someone on this list help me get started with Inkscape. I have release 0.43. I really like the program's drawing functionalities; however, so far I have not been able to figure out how to create and use .svg files (which I understand is the program's main file type). I draw cartoons and, no matter how good the program is, it is of no use to me if I cannot figure out how to share the stuff I create and post to websites, etc.
So far I have figured how to create a basic .svg file and also I've manage to import a .bmp into MS Powerpoint. I created the .bmp by 'exporting to .bmp'. But I cannot just 'copy and paste' images that I create into other programs. Why is this? Thank you.

Inkscape uses SVG as it's native format, and there aren't that many apps that speak SVG. Certainly not from Microsoft, although even FLOSS apps often can't use SVGs.
Use Inkscape's Export function, as you've been doing, if you need to use Inkscape-created images in an app that's ignorant of SVG. It's a bit irritating, but until more apps speak SVG, it's how it needs to be done.
Not even OpenOffice 2.x speaks SVG, which is a major irritation. Scribus does, thankfully.

Actually, the best app I found for viewing SVG files is Firefox. Use the File -> Open menu command to view files on your computer. It even displays SVG animation.

This brings up something rather important to me. I presume Inkscape is shooting for SVG 1.2 right now due to its inclusion of flowRoot stuff. Now, near as I can tell flowRoot is being deprecated. I can't get any other SVG program to load/render text I've flowed into a shape (I've tried Batik, Opera, Sketsa, Firefox (which is only gunning for 1.1 anyway)). Where is Inkscape headed with this?
Also, Firefox 3.0 is supposed to support text-on-path, but it doesn't render and text-on-path I've exported from Inkscape. Has anyone succeeded in getting this working and would be willing to give me pointers?

We have a plan to solve this in svg 1.1 using switch. All we need now is a coder with some time.

While firefox does let you view svg files, if you have any blur in the svg (for something like a drop shadow for example) firefox will not render the blur properly. I think you get the same shape and shade but with sharp edges, ie. no blur.
I read further down in this thread and I guess firefox is supporting SVG 1.1. I guess blur might be part of 1.2.

Blur is part of SVG 1.1. I just think Firefox simply doesn't support any filters (yet).

Firefox 3 supports filters:

0.43 is quite old
As a general rule it is a good idea to upgrade to the latest version before asking questions or pointing out problems in the older versions but in youre case the problems seem more general than that.
have not been able to figure out how to create and use .svg files (which I understand is the program's main file type).
SVG files can be created using Inkscape and viewed using the Adobe SVG Viewer. Most users of Microsoft Windows with a recent version of Adobe Acrobat reader will also have the Adobe SVG Viewer installed (as it is often included with Acrobat). Users with Adobe Illustrator can edit as well as view SVG files.
There are many other programs capable of viewing and editing SVG files, for a list of just a few see the Inkscape wiki http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/OtherProjects
Based on this question active contributors might want to expand the Inkscape Frequently Asked Questions and perhaps explain in more detail what Scalable Vector Graphics are. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#What_is_.27Scalable_Vector_Graph...
(And a link to "What are Scalable Vector Graphics" because I'm sure someone will correct the grammar sooner or later:) http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#What_are_.27Scalable_Vector_Grap...

Converting from SVG to PNG (Portable Network Graphics, see Export) should work for most users with a web browser but with the warning that Microsoft have utterly failed to provide adequate support for transparency in their half assed version of PNG support.
So far I have figured how to create a basic .svg file and also I've manage to import a .bmp into MS Powerpoint.
presumably you got that far by converting an Inkscape PNG to BMP files using another program
there is experimental work to add WMF support (Windows Metafile) which might benefit you in future but in your case I'd recommend you just update regulary and keep an eye out for that feature.
I created the .bmp by 'exporting to .bmp'.
Inkscape includes a built in option to export to PNG and Powerpoint should be able to understand PNG files just as well as BMP files and PNG files have the advantage of being much much smaller
But I cannot just 'copy and paste' images that I create into other programs. Why is this?
Inkscape does not yet support copy and paste between programs (or even copy and paste between different copies of Inkscape). That would require work to understand the native clipboard, and at present other tasks are considered more important by developers but I'm sure they will get round to it sooner or later. With open source you can only encourage, you cannot dictate what developer priorities should be (unless you pay a developer to work on the features you are most intersted in but that only helps a little).

You can use drag and drop between windows instead of copy and paste. You can do multiple-massive import of images in this way. Put the inkscape window under the file manager window, select files you want and drop into inkscape.
Easy and fast.

Just to clarify - this is from a *file* manager window to Inkscape, not one inkscape window to another.

Don't forget you CAN do copy and paste between two windows of the same instance of Inkscape. I do this all the time. Start up by loading a template file, then use File > Open... to load a second file. You can now freely copy and paste between the two.

Oh cool - I tried that earlier and it didn't work so I assumed the worst.

Phew. I thought I was going crazy, as I do this kind of thing all the time, and you guys were starting to convince me I was imagining it.
