I just tried inkscape200607170320.package but still get the message :
error while loading shared libraries: libcairo.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
This has so far made it impossible for me to look at V.44 which is most frustrating :(

I just don't know how to fix it? Can you offer any suggestions for how I might proceed?

Just my guess: try reinstalling cairo (and maybe libsvg and libsvg-cairo, if it complains) manually with the configure command: ./configure --prefix=/usr/bin Maybe your cairo is located in /usr/local/bin and cannot be found

Unfortunately Mdk10.1 can't install cairo at all as it has some newer parts of xorg missing, and cairo requires these.
Eventually I will probably upgrade to Mandriva 2007 when it comes out. I avoided 2005 and 2006 for stability reasons and on a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it basis'. Up till now almost everything I've installed has worked quite happily.

As I understand it Inkscape doesn't use cairo at all, so presumably some dependency-of-a-dependency sort of thing has happened between V 0.43 and 0.44.
have any of the new features called on a library that wasn't used before? Maybe such a library has bits (we don't use) that require cairo?
If it's a fairly small routine would it be possible to code round it?

Newer versions of Gtk. Also, we'll be using cairo directly with 0.45 on. I'm not sure what the best answer for running on older distros is; I'm exploring different options, including making LSB packages.

Right. That more-or-less puts a lid on it then :(
I guess I'll have to carry on with 0.43 until Mandriva 2007 comes out.

I had the same problem with Xandros, so I switched to Kubuntu.
I'd actually prefer to use Xandros for some things, but Inkscape is the single most important application on my machine, and there's no way I'm going to settle for anything but the latest and greatest version.
So I'm hoping Xandros gets its act together and supports Cairo sooner than later.
